What does "Average ECs" mean?

I see people here using that term a lot, but I don't know what that means. Which ECs are "average"??
I feel like it's so subjective, but maybe everyone else knows something I don't?

I think no matter what EC, as long as your DC stands out, it's not average. So in that sense, it's not that ECs themselves being average. On the other hand, it's more difficult to stand out if so many kids are doing the same EC. So yeah, it cpuld be both.

Subjective but I think it’s generally school related (school club), insignificant impact, lots of kids are doing them), club sports (not recruited), typical volunteering (50 hrs but at lots of diff places).

Captain/President for 1-2 clubs is average and table stakes for T20.

Outside of T20, it would be seen as above average.

Varsity sport for 2-4 years plus participating in 1-3 school clubs during HS is average for top 40 schools.

+1. Above average ECs for T20 would be state or national level awards, recruited athlete, non-school project with clear demonstrated impact on the community, etc.
