If every kid is doing the same damn EC

How did yours stand out?
Grade inflation, mid range test scores, no test scores. Don't most seniors seem the "same?"

Which EC is everyone doing?

Sorry to tell you, OP, but it’s a bell curve. MOST students are average (a little above, a little below, but generally average).

Luckily, there are literally thousands of colleges in the US. So even if your kid has mid range scores, they’ll still get accepted somewhere.

NP: varsity sports (non-recruit), club leader, Debate/Model UN, student gov, music/band, robotics/science fair, volunteering (animal shelters, church, or hospital)

None of those are impressive.

Different poster: I agree and here is why. Think about how many schools there are in the country. Now how many have clubs and then how many have club leaders? Same for varsity sports, student gov, band, science fair, and volunteering. So while these are worthwhile activities, none of these will make your child stand out from the hundreds of thousands of kids just like this.

No one will tell you this if their kids are currently seniors or younger (in HS).

this is why winning nationals in debate is a huge, basically a golden ticket. but that's a pair of kids in the US. do you regular ol' debate is meaningful? it's not. (I mean, it is .. all these are good things for kids to develop their voice, etc but doenst matter for college)

same with music, science fair , etc

My DS didn't do any of those activities. He worked PT as a dishwasher/host/food runner. He likes working and earning his own money. No grade inflation in Catholic school. Maybe some grade deflation.

There are tons of kids who get into top colleges with the formula of:

Top grades in hardest tracks
Tippy top test scores
Enough ECs to pass muster as well rounded

This was me and most of my friends, who were all top 25% (and usually top 10%) at Ivy graduation.

Right?? At DD's school, the same 10-15 girls are "co-presidents" of multiple clubs.

I'm hoping my DD's clubs, leadership, volunteer work and paid job all tie together and help her stand out.

it doesnt get you into the t20 schools, but that's not the goal for 99% of American.

kids like model un, sports, working at the animal shelter. and then they get into good colleges and have good lives
