Private & Independent Schools
My alma mater small private school here in DC is in the midst of a search for a new head of school. They emailed us the list of the 4 finalists and they are all male. I find this a little disconcerting. The majority of teachers are still female and yet, with the exception of the all-girls schools, Maret, Beauvoir and Lowell School I can't think of another female head of school. Why are women not being hired into these positions? Many, many public schools have female principals. What gives?
Harbor has a female head. She's great. Holton, too, although you may be including that in your all-girls reference.
The Langley School has a female head too, and its a co-ed school. Dorris Cottam is really nice and down to earth.
Heads of Private Schools have to raise money. Big donors are often male. As antiquated as this idea seems - there it is...
Agree with 11:47 that this can be a factor. Also, Sometimes there are qualified women who want to stay in the classroom--at our school we have several women who have been asked on more than one occasion to apply for Head jobs at schools in and out of this area and they've chosen not to because they want the classroom component.

OP, I know which school you're referring to because I had the same reaction. I wondered how hard they had tried to get female candidates.
|
Hasn't Maret had a female head of school for quite a while?
|
Concord Hill head is also female.

OP here...OK maybe I was wrong and there are more out there than I thought. I guess I was just taken aback that in this day and age they weren't able to come up with one female finalist. Maybe it is the school which is supposedly "progressive" but wasn't able to attract a decent female candidate or maybe the search committee had a type in mind when they went looking through resumes.

Yes, Maret head is female.
Holton head is female.
Lowell's head is female.
Joan Holden is the longtime head of St. Stephens/St. Agnes.
Primary Day's head is female.
