Partner started a new job. I’m worried they’re not doing well. Boss just suggested that they are in a ‘probationary

period’ and that they will meet with boss and HR together next week.

This does not sound promising, does it?

Yeah, that doesn’t sound very good.

No. Try for a PIP instead of termination.

If it’s the first 90 days, it’s not going to be a PIP. They’ll get terminated because it wasn’t a “good fit”.

How long ago did they start? If really recently I wouldn’t get really stressed. In a lot of companies new hires start in a probationary status. If it’s been a quarter or more then I’d agree there are probably performance concerns

What had you worried they were not doing well?
Anonymous
They should have known up front if there was a probationary period and how long. Check handbook.

If non-union and no employment contract, probationary status is sort of misleading, as employees are terminable at will at any time, regardless of whether probation was completed successfully.

OP did partner not know they were in a probationary period? Did boss suggest or tell them something they didn't know? Or didn't tell you?
It should be part of their offer and certainly in their HR handbook.
I have had 6 month probation periods starting new jobs but I knew it starting out.

How does your spouse think they are performing?

Some places have everyone in a 60 to 90 day probationary period and include a mid probation review sometimes including HR as part of the process.
Anonymous
90 day is common.

Np. Everyone knows this, but companies tend to be careful about terminating people

We don’t do probationary periods at my co.

That doesn’t bode well. It’s early to have had a clash vs “clashes.”
