| For the dmv privates like Big5, how many spots actually would be left after the sibling preferences for 6th grade admission in a typical year? Just gauging the realistic chance for a non sibling applicant. |
| It probably changes each year depending on how many siblings are actually applying? Ask during tours and interviews at each school. |
Can someone share successful stories of non sibling non VIP get in? Every tour we went there are people who already have kids in upper grades. Makes me feel a school like Sidwell or gds can fill their spots with just siblings two times over. |
Our kid at GDS would be one, and there are others in their class starting in 6th who are non-VIP/non-sibling. But it's unlikely, given how much the 6th grade class expands and the need to not exceed the overall cap, that the school accepts more than 18-20 kids total for 6th grade, with the expectation (prayers, actually) that not all 18-20 enroll. Because if they all did, that would be a problem for the school. So it's a numbers game no matter what. |

The year we applied to STA there were 5 spots total for 6th grade. No siblings or legacy that year.
My kid was not admitted. I think a typical year is more like 8-10 spots for 6th grade. I imagine 2-4 may be siblings or legacies? |
Our non-sibling, non-urm male got into two "Big 5" schools with no hook (and was rejected...well, "waitlisted technically" from two more). |
| There are also legacy kids. Although I’d wager many will have already enrolled prior to 6th. |
| Sibling preference isn’t that strong. We’re at Stoneridge and plenty of girls have gotten rejected eventhough they have siblings here. |
Depends on the school. A few years ago, GDS got themselves into a situation where they had to limit admissions so as not to continue to be in violation of a legal agreement with the city. They showed how much they favor sibling admits, even for US. |
Will they actually share those numbers? "Last year we had 15 spots and 13 were filled by siblings/legacies" |
Thanks. |
| DC was accepted into Big 3, URM, non-sibling, non-vip. Interviewed really well (and is bright). Got accepted at another private and waitlisted at GDS. |
Oh, sounds like the smart parents enrolled their kids in K. |
| Not a lot, but it will save you close to $1m if you wait. |
The rich parents. |
