| Does anyone know what the media MAP scores are for area independent schools? DS in in 8th in a public school, and we received his scores for Math and Reading. We are wondering how his score stack up for admission into 9th. (Scores are in the 250 range for both.) He will take the SSAT, too. TIA. |
| Look at percentile not raw score and 90%+ is good |
| Agree. Percentiles are meaningful. 90th percentile or higher is good. |

MAP is BS, IMO. Do they enforce or ensure consistent, rigorous proctoring? How many teachers walk around and “help” their students? How do they ensure that all students receive the same amount of time?
It’s not like the SAT. It’s just a bunch of random kids randomly doing problems on in their iPads, as far as I can tell |
It's an untimed test that is adaptive to the questions being answered. Why would you think teachers are helping? Strange take. It's probably the most meaningful test- it's not aptitude, just pure knowledge. |

My 2 kids:
Math, reading, language arts 99, 98, 99 93, 99, 98 |
Not the question asked but nice humble brag |
Teachers don’t help kids. Map is an adaptive test. |
I don’t think it is a humble brag. Just 2 data points and based on what I know about the students, lots of kids have scores in this range. I think most are 90+ percentile. I would be shocked if the median was lower than 90 percentile |
Lol. That's not how percentiles work. |
Troll |
The percentiles given are from all students in the US. A student who is 90th percentile nationally could easily be only 50-60 percentile when compared only to private school students in an educated area. |
Right, that's why OP was asking. NP here, we were only given the percentiles on a national basis, so I have no idea how my kid compares to peers in independent schools. I guess people could post their 8th graders' raw scores to get a sense of it. I have a 7th grader so that's a different peer group. |
| Your kid's score will also depend on whether your child took it seriously. My kid's ELA percentile ranged from 99th to 85th percentile throughout middle school, based on whether he slowed down and did his best. |
The percentiles are for all kids who took it. For an independent school, the median absolutely could be in the 90+ percentile For a strong public school, the same could be true. |
