Suggestions for short winter break getaway?

Anonymous
We haven't planned in advance and are thinking about a couple day getaway with our three teen boys (one in college).

Skiing & tropical locations are both soooo expensive. Husband said no to NYC. Considering New Orleans and Miami. I know Miami is iffy on weather that time of year (beach/pool may or may not be options).

Any other change-of-scenery quick trips? We love tennis, good restaurants, bike riding (city not mountain biking), could see a show somewhere too.

New Orleans is super fun and the weather is generally nice this time of year. That is a great option. The food is very affordable and amazing. We are going to South Beach this year so nothing particularly original for us but we will have fun and it’s nice to be in the warm weather.

When we did winter break in NOLA it was a blast, but only about 45 degrees. So not a warm weather destination.

Puerto Rico if you can afford direct flights.

What kind of stuff will you do with your kids? How old are they?

May be too far of a flight but LA

I personally wouldn’t fly anywhere just for a couple of days. Not with 5 people and having to buy 5 tickets in peak season for 2 days unless you plan on staying longer.

We once did Busch Gardens ( really nice at Christmas) and toured the Christmas homes in Williamsburg and that was nice for a weekend.

Charleston is hit or miss, but sometimes it’s decently warm-ish. Not beach weather, but pleasant enough. Drive or fly. Beaches nearby. Great walking/shopping/food.

This. I would just drive somewhere. Williamsburg, Charlottesville, the Homestead, the eastern shore, etc.

I think Philadelphia would be great, you could get a nice hotel, see a show, museums. The food scene is great, fun shopping areas

Yeah, I thought of the Homestead. It's not glamorous like Miami or New Orleans, but so much easier for a short trip with 3 teen boys.

Miami is NOT iffy on weather, it's going to be prime gorgeous beach time! You can still find cheap tickets.

I would just go on Airbnb and put the dates you're looking for, go to map mode, and look for a good find in a location you can drive to. Might find a really cool nature house with sauna, stay at a ranch and ride horses, something interesting like that.

Good luck!

New Orleans would be nice.

Also Savannah + Hilton Head. HHI in the off season is fantastic, especially the bike riding. No crowds, less traffic, mild weather. You won’t be swimming in the ocean, but we were satisfied with hitting the heated pool and hot tub every day after riding bikes on the beach. It was one of our favorite family vacations, so relaxing.

HHI also has tons of tennis courts and you’ll have them to yourselves. Great shopping nearby at the outlets in Bluffton. Savannah close by as well and so beautiful.
