Choosing Middlebury over Williams

Anonymous
Would someone be crazy to choose Middlebury over Williams?

Context: interested in classics and economics. Possible legacy at Williams (grandfather, uncle, and cousins). That wing of the family thinks my son is nuts for leaning towards Midd. My sense is the schools are closer than they were a generation ago.

Choosing Midd over Williams would be like choosing Dartmouth over Princeton, or Brown over Yale. Not the common choice, but not one that will result in a lesser education.

Go with where kid vibed-in more. Midd prep. Williams more athletes. Now someone will come in and say no it's not like that at withe college. Cue...1, 2, 3...

It’s a vibe thing. Totally understandable

I went to Williams but I can see why someone would choose Middlebury over Williams. I don’t think anyone could go wrong with either. It comes down to fit.

Mid and Williams get kids of the same profile from our school. No difference. If any difference, it would be taht Mid kids got in in the ED round, Williams RD.

I don't think it's crazy choosing Mid over Williams. But Williams does rank higher or have a perceived higher prestige. If that doesn't matter to you, go with Mid.

Classics at Midd is very special. This is 10 years old, but the faculty hasn’t changed.

Princeton is more prestigious than Dartmouth, but today the students and academic rigor are equivalent. That was probably not true when your son’s grandfather attended.

Similar story with Williams and Middlebury.

Williams may have a slightly higher number of superstar students (think kids who go to Yale Law, Harvard Med, etc). But Midd gets plenty of those kids too, and it’s better to thrive at Midd than be average at Williams. Your son should go where he thinks he can be happy and thrive.

As an aspect to consider, Middlebury reported 0 first majors in classics in a recent year based on IPEDS information:

Your Williams relatives sound like all of the Williams grads that I know.
