Is anyone’s kid Russian studies major?
What type of activities did they have in high school? Besides obviously taking Russian and being interested in Russian literature. Also Russian geopolitics.

And what college?

That's the major of a trust fund kid. There is virtually no opportunity for employment in the field.

You make no sense. Of course that is a knowledge & skill set that could be useful.

In terms of few college suggestions, look into Dartmouth, Hamilton, Wesleyan and Pomona, should your child be interested in highly selective schools.

What?

My nephew was this major (but long time ago) at Ivy.

At IB. At one time worked in Eastern Europe. Now London.

Things might be different today as the world waits for Putin to die.

Also it’s usually Slavic/Eastern European studies. Russia is relevant across the diaspora.

I was a Russian studies / foreign affairs major at UVA. I took Russian in Hs and participated in the ny state Russian olympiad and did lots of cultural exchange / volunteer clubs and esl tutoring type activities. I won the Russian and Spanish awards in HS. Also got into Hopkins and Georgetown sfs (off the waitlist) despite a weaker math sat score than average for those colleges. My dad had health issues that made me leave my study abroad early junior year and then just go to law school after I graduated, so I could be around to help him. My plan before that had been to take the foreign service exam- I won the Russian award at UVA but never did anything with it, unfortunately. I was talked out of jag by law school mentors but wonder if that would have been a path to use my background. I had thought about rotc for college, which would have been a must financially if i were to go to a private school. I can’t imagine wanting to pursue the degree these days, though, when study abroad in Russia is not feasible.

Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, Dartmouth,UCLA, Georgetown and few others have great Russian Studies programs. It helps if you can do semester or year abroad in a country where you are immersed in the language you intend to master and of course graduate degree opens more doors.

That being said, only a small percentage of people make good money with it, prestigious career is more attainable so it depends on your goals in life.

I probably would've had a hard time agreeing to pay for full pay at a top private plus grad school but if kid was seriously interested, likely would've paid knowing it would be near impossible for them to pay back such loans. Its more of a choice for people who are getting significant financial aid. They can study whatever their heart desires.
