I was a Russian studies / foreign affairs major at UVA. I took Russian in Hs and participated in the ny state Russian olympiad and did lots of cultural exchange / volunteer clubs and esl tutoring type activities. I won the Russian and Spanish awards in HS. Also got into Hopkins and Georgetown sfs (off the waitlist) despite a weaker math sat score than average for those colleges. My dad had health issues that made me leave my study abroad early junior year and then just go to law school after I graduated, so I could be around to help him. My plan before that had been to take the foreign service exam- I won the Russian award at UVA but never did anything with it, unfortunately. I was talked out of jag by law school mentors but wonder if that would have been a path to use my background. I had thought about rotc for college, which would have been a must financially if i were to go to a private school. I can’t imagine wanting to pursue the degree these days, though, when study abroad in Russia is not feasible.
