PSA: you can get HPV vax without an Rx until age 46

Anonymous
A lot of us in our 40s were too old for the HPV vaccine when it was first released. The age limits have changed since then, but I've had doctors tell me all sorts of contradictory things about it over the years, e.g. that people over 26 are probably already exposed or that it's unnecessary in a monogamous relationship. None of these recommendations were based on my individual history, only on statistics.

The vaccine is available to men and women. If you want it, you can schedule online at CVS and just get it.

It's a 3-shot series that takes about 8 months to complete (shots at 0, 1-2 months, and 6 months) and you must complete all three shots before you turn 46 to avoid having to get a prescription.

Good PSA but my insurance co said you just have to start the first shot before you turn 47 (first shot any time at 46 is ok). You all might want to check with your insr

Why the age cutoff? Anyone know?

I have assumed they think we have it.
I haven't and we have been monogamous since 1979. But I resent being told no in 2006.

Get it. Absolutely get it. You just never ever know.

But you can clear HPV yourself too. And you weren’t necessarily exposed to the kind that cause horrible cancers. I have never had an abnormal pap and I’ve been married for 20 years and I still got it. Life isn’t neat and tidy. Protect yourself before these christo-fascists take this away from us. You know it’s coming with their message that only dirty women get stis anyway.

I tried, Cigna wouldn’t cover it. Divorced after 20+ years with a negative hpv test. Good luck!

They will not give it to me even cash pay.

My GYN said there are many ladies in 60s/70s coming in with with HPV due to careless birth control methods post divorce or death of their partner… or potential cheating spouses.

Men 50s+ are NOT going to wear condoms for several reasons/excuses so be careful.

Bottom line-insurance coverage. They have upped the age limit a couple of times. I can find no source that says the shot causes any harm, regardless of age. If approved for all ages, insurance will be required to cover it. They would prefer to not pay.

Yes these are the public talking points. But thinking it through logically makes no coherent sense. It angers me that the public is lied to that way.

Basically signals you are cheating. At that age you should be exclusive or married.

Yeah, no thanks.

Good luck with that approach. Majority of marriages do not last, spouse cheats, or one dies. Life happens to everyone, even people with perfect bubble wrapped lives.
