Travel Discussion
| I have a Jewish friend who is going to Israel in a few weeks on a girls trip. Seems tone-deaf, no? |
Why is it tone-deaf? Businesses that rely on tourism need customers. |
| Go, have fun. It's incredibly safe right now and is an amazing country. Seriously. |
When would you think it would be appropriate for her to go? At least now there’s a ceasefire, which hopefully Israel won’t violate. |
| Should be a fascinating destination. Good for her. |
| I have several friends who have gone this year. And my Israeli friends who live here go back often. I would have no problem going if I had the time and money. |
| I boycott Israel travel as a matter of principle and started well before the latest Gaza war. |
| She is showing her values. She values Israel. Israeli people depend on tourism, and she is showing support for the Israeli people by going to Israel and spending money there. This is her choice, and one she is allowed to make. This does not me she supports Bibi, this does not mean she does not think horrible atrocities occurred in Gaza. |
| Have you ever been? It’s one of the most lovely countries to vacation. There is a lot of history, great food, beautiful scenery. She may have friends of family who live there that she is visiting. There is nothing tone deaf about this trip unless you think your political view and take on a complex geopolitical situation is everyone’s. |
+1. I wouldn’t spend one shekel in that genocidal state. Anyone who does so is immoral. |
What a horrible thing to say. |
You are the one who seems tone deaf. |

I personally wouldn’t go any time soon - and I’m Jewish - because of my politics, just like I don’t fly Avelo because of their ICE connection. But stop being all holier than though, OP. Everyone makes different choices. People go to China all the time - not exactly a bastion of human rights. Ditto various South American and African countries. Would you care if she went to Sudan or the Amazon?
For that matter I continue to live and work in the US despite vehemently disagreeing with most of the foreign and domestic actions of this administration, and I bet you do too. |
| I have friends who are Israeli citizens living in the U.S. who have been back to Israel almost every year since we've known them; they're also among the most left-wing people I know on Israel/Palestine issues, and when they go, they participate in mass demonstrations against the Israeli government and the occupation. I guess it's tone-deaf for them to visit, too, according to OP? |
You sound like a real peach. I'm sure the loss of your tourist dollars is being felt keenly. |
