UMD and other applications that need extra time for processing?

Anonymous
UMD recommends submitting with a 2-week window before 11/1 to ensure applications are cleared in time (so essentially it is a deadline for mid-October). What other colleges/universities should be submitted 2 weeks or so before the actual deadline? Thank you for sharing your wisdom!!!!

Really? This must be a new thing. A few years ago when my son applied, I don't recall they had this request.

Wut? If that were true then they should make the deadline two weeks earlier.

Take a look at UMD's official facebook page and the class of 2030 page about processing times. Are there any other colleges that need at least a week for everything to be in by the deadline?

From University of Maryland Admissions Facebook Page: Important Reminder for Freshman applicants: Recently submitted materials may take up to 10 business days to be listed as received on your Terps Application Portal (TAP)

I think the issue is that since it can take up to 10 business days for the portal to update, you may not know something is missing until after the 11/1 deadline. As long as UMD receives everything by 11/1, you will still be considered Early Action.

This has always been the case with UMD. We did not know that two years ago when my elder applied, we did not have 10 business days. Fortunately, they cleared sooner, but it was very stressful. With my younger one now, we made sure the application was filed last week. I know of someone who got burnt on this.

if the deadline is Nov 1 - do the recommendations from the teachers/councilors need to be with the admissions office by that date also?

Does this the 2 week window include letters of recommendation?

UMD says to also send official SAT/ACT scores by the deadline in order for my application to be considered complete

I don't understand why UMD does this. It's not helping anyone.

Why can't they do an initial pass with a rough cut based on low effort data like transcripts, and then notify the remaining fraction that they need to submit essays a bit later?

Where does it say this?

We submitted last week but nothing supplemental has shown up in their portal (transcripts/letters of recommendation/etc). Those same documents appeared as received the first time DC logged into portals for the other eight schools DC applied to.

So are we late if we submit by this Sunday?

Can you send a link of where it says to submit 2 weeks prior?

Not if you submit everything. But if you miss something, it might be a problem if you don’t realize it and there is a delay in the portal updating.

Other reasons to submit early are things like losing internet and not being able to meet the deadline. How early you submit is just a function of your risk tolerance and your willingness to live with malfunctions and errors.
