No longer writing in middle school

Anonymous
For all of DD's subjects, she has not been required to write more than 1-2 sentences for a response. In English so far, she has written 1 paragraph all year.

She is in the "advanced" english class. She's not in the higher level history class- so she may have gotten more writing if she did this.

Straight As in everything...

This is why we are no longer in the public school system.

There is no advanced English class. (The grade level class is called "advanced English" but neither MCPS nor anyone else claims it is actually advanced.)

As a former MCPS teacher who has a student still in the system, this always infuriated me. It is definitely an after-effect of COVID because before the expectations changed, my students were writing essays even when I taught middle school science classes. Multi-page papers for other classes. This is not equity in any way.

PP - my lest sentence was referring to what the expectations are now. It’s not equitable to have such low expectations across the board for the development of essential critical thinking and writing skills.

OP ask the teacher about the EWP (extended writing project). There is 1/MP, and at our school kids in all 3 grades hbe already turned it in.
Anonymous
Sorry, to be clear, the EWP is in English.

My 8th grader is writing a lot and barely hanging onto a C. Based on my older kids, it gets even more comprehensive in high school. Consider supplementing with a tutor during 7th or 8th grade.

How does race come in this? Wouldn't it be best to say, "Yeah- this is how you create equity- very low standards for everyone."

Because of your statement, it drives me to think that you think a certain race is not high achievers. Could you please share with us which race this is, sir/madam?

Go check MCAP report card and filter by race, you will find the answer

I sometimes wonder why some kids from immigrant families (parents not fluent in a English) have better writing and reading comprehension skills than kids from here. Immigrant parents can't help them at all.

They put their kids from age 3 or 4 in Kumon reading or other tutoring programs. Kumon reading has a lot of reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and writing.

Actually, they supplement math, not reading.Ask me how I know.

Weird - my 6th grader just had to write a three page story for her English class. It was painful, but a good exercise and split into steps (characters, plot outline, rough draft).

She's in the advanced English class at a non-W feeder MCPS middle school.

To clarify, are talking about hand writing papers or just typing?
