Jewish at Boston College

For many reasons, DD is very interested in BC. It's the perfect size in a fabulous college town, has a great amount of school spirit, has a beautiful campus, with the kind of major she is interested in. I'm curious if there are any DCUMs that have a Jewish kid at BC and how that has been. I looked at the Hillel site, and there is an 'okay' sized Jewish population. Generally, Jesuit Universities are very cool with our people, so I wanted to just get some first hand experiences. TIA!

Two threads that asked the same question last year:

A different thread that talks more generally about the role of religion at BC:

Which T50 schools would you suggest instead of BC?

When my dd was looking at colleges, BC came up. I made some calls to ask about Jewish life. It depends on what you want. BC is catholic and that drives the school culture and a bit of the curriculum. There is a small jewish population with some student driven events but not much. There is no chabad at BC. The hillel at BC is not specific to supporting BC exclusively- it serves several colleges in the area with smaller jewish populations.

How important is Jewish identity to your child? If not very important, then BC is fine. If your kid definitely wants to join Hillel and Jewish identity is a big part of your kid's life, then there are schools that would be a better fit.

Thanks for all of the helpful responses- we are quite affiliated with Jewish identity as a core tenant of our family's values. My DD would def want Jewish life on campus. We'll check it out and I'll check the other threads! Also, 18:43, this is a bizarre response. I wonder, where is your brain?

What did the Jesuits ever do to you?

Also note that Brookline and Chestnut Hill both have large Jewish populations.

My kid also wanted mid size, some school spirit and/or vibrant social student life, nice campus, and a school with a supportive jewish population. We looked at vanderbilt, wake forest, duke, upenn, georgetown, tulane, miami, usc (california), lehigh, and some larger flagships like Indiana, Michigan, etc. We initially considered bc and villanova, but after thinking about the limited options for jewish student life, decided against applying.

I suggest reaching out to the Hillel when you visit. My son ended up thinking it was a smaller/ less active Jewish community than he wanted. He goes to Tufts btw and loves it but not sure that’s on your list.
