Girl scout camp & cub scout camp

What are the choices of girl scout camp (will be rising 2nd grader next summer) & cub scout camp (will be rising 5th grader next summer) in Montgomery county area? The rising 5th grader is a boy, and he can do sleepaway camp as well which is 1-2 hours away.

Cub scouts attend camp with their Pack or possibly a parent or guardian. If you have a cub without a Pack, you may be able to register them with a provisional unit. You should contact the National Capital Area Council to find out. Or find a Pack to join at https://beascout.scouting.org. However, I do not believe you can sign up individual kids for Cub Scout camps the way you might be able to with Girl Scout camps.

Cub Scouts has day and overnight camps, but both require adult volunteers to attend with them. It is how Scouting America keeps costs down, they have parent volunteers attend which saves on camp counselors. Camps are also used to help with bonding in the unit, Packs or Troops. Older Scouts in a Troop can attend as a Provisional Scout but they means that they are attached to a different Troop attending the camp. There are some Provisional units, but I think the cost is a bit higher for those camps.

Girl Scouts National Capital Council runs three overnight camps. There’s a lottery system to sign up. We’ve always gotten our first choice, but my kid is older so there’s less competition.

One year we used a Council in Maryland and signup was a lot less crazy (but then the subsequent year that camp canceled all camps at the last minute due to staffing issues.)

If you go in the GS website you can likely see the camp guide from 2025 which will give you an idea of prices and program options. The 2026 guide will come out later this fall and the lottery registration opens in January.

Op here. I ask because I happen to have a kid at cub scout and a kid at girl scout. The girl scout one needs flushable toilet, mosquito loves to bite her and need some indoor/quiet activities (cannot do purely outdoor), a bit more high maintenance. The cub scout one can get dirty and sweaty outdoor, lives building forts/fire and playing in the water/lake, fine to pee at portable or in the woods, but he is annoyed when there are no activities to do. He likes to be on the go. Their summer camps have been fun because they are quite organized and fully staffed. What is the vibe or culture of cub scout summer camp or girl scout summer camp? It mentions above that they need volunteers and may be canceled if understaffed. Does that mean their camp may be understaffed and do not offer many activities because of tight budget? Are those camps cheaper than average camps in dmv area?

You should talk to the families in your kids cub scout pack. They are the most likely to know what the plan is for the pack, what adults are going, what camp, and how active it was in the past.

GSCNC Camp Winona meets your flush toilet requirement, but overall may be too outdoorsy for your DD. That said, the standard sessions are 6 nights, and they have shorter sessions available, so it's pretty short term. There are also day camps in MoCo, but they open registration up kind of late, so if you need to plan out a whole summer that is not ideal.

Really? I stayed there as part of a mom-daughter event and I don't recall flush toilets in the tents, only at the dining hall.

OP, send your DD to one of the half-week GS camps at Winona so that she can try it out. If she loves it, she can stay longer next year. If she hates it, it was only a couple nights.

Maybe you got unlucky, PP, but there are a lot of flush toilets at Winona https://www.gscnc.org/content/dam/gscnc-redesign/documents/Winona%20At%20A%20Glance-%207-3-21.pdf
