DC parking restrictions Sept 2025

Anonymous
I drove into Washington DC to meet a friend at the museum.

Parking was so much more difficult than usual. So many locations are restricted and have signage such as “authorized permit parking only. Another said what looked like “SWA(?)” Parking.

Can anyone explain what either of these are about?

A lot of things changed from 2022-2024. DDOT, the Council and some ANCs went crazy. It was not for the better.

Who holds the authorized permits for these spots?

Try metro. Parking lots at metro stations are free on weekend, and the fare is capped at $2.50.

Nice try. Sounds like Trump admin making sure is goons have ample parking so they can harass brown people.

What an absurd comment. Many cities have been changing to more restricted parking areas over the past ten years. I bet you just love an argument and purposely try to stir up trouble.

Why aren’t they charging market rates? That is bull shit. Why is Trump’s government subsiding everything!

Stop crying and take the Metro if you don't like it.

You have to drive to the Metro and park there, too much work to spend so much time getting to DC if you live in any close-in suburb where driving takes 10-20 min to get to where you need to be. DC makes stupid rules trying to follow NYC which has magnitude higher density and where it makes sense while DC itself is mostly empty with barely any people walking around and its businesses could use a little patronage from the suburbanites who have a lot of other options for dining/entertainment nowadays with easy parking. At some point people will stop making an effort, which won't be great for DC local economy. It's not like offices are full at their previous pre-Covid capacity or ever will be.
