Notre Dame from non-Catholic/ non-feeder school: TO? other advice?

Anonymous

Hi -- DC's first choice is ND but scores are below the 50%. Submit?

Any other advice? We've been advised to emphasize service.

Community service yes.
Do Not Submit
Chances are really really low.
What is GPA? If it’s not 3.8 forgettaboutit

Reminder, half the enrolled class is below the 50th percentile. Not submitting below the 50th percentile is outdated advice by multiple years. Submit if anywhere near the 25th. The 25th percentile is 1470 for class of 2028, so I'd submit low 1430+.

58% submitted scores in the class of 2028.

Not just service. God.

Why ND if not Catholic? You'll be an oddity. More than 80% of the student body is Catholic.

My kid was admitted this past cycle with a 32 ACT and 4.1 unweighted GPA. A lot of EC's, volunteer work, leadership and 2 varsity sports. Attended a Catholic High School. They really take a holistic review. I would submit.

2/3 of the US population identifies as Christian. If the OP’s kid is Christian it’s fine. In fact, it wouldn’t even matter if OP’s kid were a practicing Muslim. To “fit in” at Notre Dame, you have to be comfortable being around religion. I wouldn’t recommend it to an atheist but other than that you’re good.

I would submit for sure if over the 25%

It’s my kid’s first choice as well. I said good luck to him and good luck to your kid as well. It’s a very tough admit. They seem to like certain schools. They’re very traditional and they like to keep it that way.

Notre Dame is big on test scores. They say they’re test optional yes, but historically they cared big time about the scores and I don’t believe that’s changed

They do care about test scores. Submit.

Well, yes, but OP’s kid is probably not in the classes of students that the bottom 50th percentile and certainly the bottom 25th percent caters to: UR, first generation, athletes, legacies, sponsored Catholics, diverse geographical points and so on.

Right. If coming from public school, applicant would need to have stellar academic record.

I think the school is not a Catholic one. The kid might be.
