Revised SOL Cut Scores

Has this been discussed? Just wondering what thoughts people have on the proposed scores. The new cutoff for a proficient score will range from 444 to 479 for reading and from 430 to 453 in math, depending on the grade level.

I really don’t care as my kids always have passed.

479 for reading is very high … probably only 2 questions off from the current pass advance right?

What does a 400 mean or even a 600 mean? It means they jiggered the scores to meet certain criteria. Now a bunch of kids will fail for a year or so and they will learn to jigger the scores in a different way.

In that case, would previous pass scores be a fail in the system now? My kid got a 413 on her 5th grade science SOL… but they don’t say anything about the science SOL. My kid is perfectly fine on everything except the science one

Yes.

No, it hasn’t been fully discussed yet because the information is not finalized. In the article posted, it says that there are still many aspects to be worked out.

At the last all-county principals meeting, principals were made aware that this was being discussed and voted on. But there’s not much else to do, talk about or worry about since there are still many details missing. Any discussion now would be speculation.

DCUM likes to engage in all sorts of speculation conversations which leaves me not surprised that OP is bringing this up.

China laughs at our educational regression. At least this new SOL increase is a small step in the right direction.

Perhaps you should move to China if it’s such a laugh riot. Have a great time there. Live your best life!

I can only comment on the math SOL scores at the HS level, but they are completely meaningless and not a measure of anything since Desmos was allowed on the test. We don’t consider them when evaluating a student’s ability in math. Admin and counselors may, but they aren’t the math teachers and don’t know any better. -HS teacher

Can someone translate in words what OP trying to say with the numbers? Is it that SOL scores being raised so have to get a higher score to pass proficient and lower to get pass advanced?

Didn’t say “fully” discussed and it is a current topic being shared through news outlets.

The level for passing will not be uniformly raised across all grades - hence the range of new cutoff scores. The rise in cutoff will also occur over several years, not all at once.

The level for passed advance isn't discussed, but presumably it will also have to be adjusted

The Youngkin administration is trying to make it harder for kids to pass. Thus, the schools will be "failing" and the need for vouchers will be imminent. Ugh.
