SEC hiring again?

I see at least two new posts for staff attorneys, open to the public.

So much for the hiring freeze. (Cue all the replies insisting that these positions are “special” and “different”).

Looks like TM has two positions open to the public (the other staff attorney job is internal only so I would say that doesn't count). Not sure how much it matters though, DRP/VERA was totally open ended without targets or caps so I would expect there to be several holes in the agency that need to be filled. I dont think you can really infer much from two job postings.

One is for an SO in OIT. They are doing a complete reorg and there could be reasons they want to hire from the outside.

Attorneys are excepted service per Schedule A so they have always been exempt from the hiring freeze per E.O.

So yes, these are, in fact, different.

Got it. So the government can’t hire anyone — except SOs, attorneys, and people to “fill holes.”

What a bunch lf BS.

The bigger question is, who worth a damn is going to apply for these jobs? Zero telework, big pay cuts (when inflation is factored in), constant threat of RIFs, CBAs ignored, and who knows what else? You’d have to be pretty desperate.

The agency has around 4K people and they are hiring what like 3 people externally? There are plenty of exceptions to the hiring freeze across the government but at the end of the day headcount across agencies is trending way lower which is what they want. A few positions here and there is just background noise.

I’m sure the world would stop turning if those 3 positions weren’t filled this year. Emergency opm exemption?

Its less about emergency and more about whether an agency head is motivated enough to ask for an exception. Could be the new director wants to bring in one of two of their own people, who knows. Its such a small number and more people than that have quit in this week alone.
