I disagree. It's the older People magazine reading crowd, regardless of personal politics. I am interested in British royalty because I'm a Europhile. I like them better than movie and fashion celebrities partly because they are not allowed, by custom, to dress provocatively. I like clothes that are actually clothes and not strategically-taped wisps of fabric. It's interesting to me to see "safe choices" precisely to see how a woman of immense wealth decides to address the constraints of her role. The implicit bargain she has made. First ladies interest me for the same reason. More than any Kardashian in a bandage dress.
I think it's mostly the bolded, but there's an element of bandwagoning with younger women who have glommed on to the backlash against Meghan Markle. A certain element of society was extremely triggered by a biracial princess and decided they had to take the other one's side, and the entrenchment became pretty deranged. Pretty much the same segment of society that gets mad when Princess and the Frog got a ride at Disney. I reject the concept of royalty in general and hate the British monarchy in particular, and I think anyone who "follows" Royals is kind of ridiculous, so I have mostly observed this on DCUM and not in real life.
