Wake tuition free for NC residents

Anonymous
Wake Forest University announced today that undergraduates from North Carolina with annual family incomes less than $200,000 per year will attend tuition-free, beginning for students admitted for the 2026 fall semester.

For North Carolina students with an annual family income less than $100,000, financial aid will cover the cost of standard living expenses in addition to the full cost of tuition. Students from North Carolina with an annual family income between $200,000 and $300,000 will be eligible for financial aid covering 50% of tuition.

Called the “North Carolina Gateway to Wake Forest University”, the initiative aims to create more opportunities for talented, high-achieving North Carolina students to attend Wake Forest regardless of family income.

You can live like a king for $190k in NC. This is ridiculous.

So in the past few days Wake, Tufts, and Emory have all announced similar programs (I'm sure I'm missing others). There is probably a decent amount of overlap in applicants.

Meanwhile the donut holers get more and more depressed as they continue to get squeezed. No one is taking up a collection for them but they have historically been the backbone of so many of these schools. Now no one cares.

Go to a state school if you’re penny pinching.

Wow! I wish this existed when I went there!
My sweet blue collar parents took on debt for me, I had a small loan, and I did have a partial scholarship that was allocated to NC students.
But this is awesome!

It really isn't. Would it kill these kids to take out a small loan like you did? And/or get a job?

Another day, another school trying to get apps by advertising supposed affordability. This morning it was Emory, this evening it's Wake.

It's all fine as long as their Net Price Calculator reflects reality.

I’m the PP. I had a loan and jobs - I just wish my parents hadn’t taken on a chunk of debt. I’m fine with my portion and think yes it’s fine. But hate students or their parents being crippled or majorly impacted by debt. My parents were very kind about it. And could only do it bc they lived so modestly and my sibling went to a state school and was an RA, so housing costs were covered. And it was a lot less $$$$ then than now.

Totally get it. What I was saying is that they can give slightly smaller massive scholarships and the student could be like you and take a small loan and get a job. As you said, you did fine with that burden. It is unfortunate that your parents had to take out the big loans (though much respect to them for doing so).
