Vice President of Enrollment Stacey Kostell talked about the demographic makeup of the class of 2029, drawn Northwestern’s largest applicant pool yet.

“You are from everywhere: 83 different countries and 48 states,” Kostell said. “You also graduated from 1,400 different high schools. About 15% of you are the very first in your family to attend college, and 160 of you are QuestBridge Scholars. You’re brilliant, accomplished, engaged and community minded.”

Hasn't that always been something they're looking for? I've always assumed I got a boost for being from a rural area 30 years ago (based on comparing my application to my peers).

I hate to break it to you, but there is nothing new about this.

If you read Montauk's book Getting into Brown:Successful Applicants’ Essays, Resumes, and Interviews (2019)

You see exactly this, time after time.

Class of 2028, 25% non-hispanic white per 2024-25 CDS
Class of 2027, 29% non-hispanic white per 2023-24 CDS
Class of 2026, 33% non-hispanic white per 2022-23 CDS

I don't think that's new. I had a dormmate from college from Alaska, and she used to say that she could have written her applications in crayon and gotten in. So few applicants from her state to East coast schools.

Isn’t the US is around 58% non-Hispanic white? And people are complaining the Northwestern is too white at 25% non-Hispanic white?

Those numbers seem very, very low for the white population. Scary low. I’d imagine they’d get exposed for some sort of discriminatory practices suit in their admissions process if I had to guess?

I bet when the new data comes out in October this class will be at least 40% non-Hispanic white.

It absolutely has always been. When I was applying to colleges in the 90s with Good but not Outstanding stats, my dad met an admissions counselor - dad asked the admissions counselor what he should do to help me stand out. He said "move to Alabama or have her take up the tuba"

It's to try and keep the Asian percentage down now that racial quotas are illegal.
