Bragging parents

Anonymous
I have kids in both elementary and high school. The parenting I knew who bragged the most about how smart their kid was or how good he was at a sport have mostly all quieted down by high school.

My youngest is still in elementary school. There are kids who are 5-6 and can add or read a chapter book and the parents cannot shut up about how their kids are geniuses. The parents of the kid who is good in rec soccer thinks the kid is going to become a professional soccer player.

Are these parents really that not self aware? Do they realize how silly they sound about their child being gifted?

We are surrounded by smart people. They went to UVA, various Ivies, MIT, etc. We are all smart. Our kids are smart. There is no need to go on about how smart our kid is.

I just smile and mentally roll my eyes. Every generation has parents like this. It’s NBD.

+1. Yeah, it's annoying. But better than the parents who put their kids down.

I don’t think the people you surround yourself with are as smart as you’re giving them credit for.

The more they brag, the more you know they are exaggerating.

Agree as long as they are just praising their own kids.

Some parents like to compare their kids to other kids in order to highlight how their kid is better. This is the worst.

If you are talking to a bunch of parents of kindergarteners boasting about your child’s reading, it is comparing whether you say it or not. You may not say Johnny can read better than Bobby but if you’re talking to Bobby’s mom and Bobby is reading Go Spot, it is kind of rude.

I remember when my oldest was this age, he couldn’t read. There was this one mom who could not shut up about how smart her daughter was, how she had to get her tested for being gifted, etc. Our kids are now in high school and that mom no longer says anything about the girl. For colleges, you need a good resume and the girl has no activities. My non reading kindergarten child now has perfect grades and a robust extracurricular list.
