DD is a hs freshman. She has significant dyslexia, dysgraphia and EF issues. We had an IEP meeting a week before school started with one person (everyone else was tied up that day) and she told she was returning to the classroom at the end of the meeting. So, needless to say, the IEP was not finalized. After that, I emailed back three times, copied the principal, ended up in a meeting with an AP and a bunch of other special ed folks, none of whom were going to be directly connected to DD. All were lovely and saying all the right things and taking lots of notes, but we still didn't get anything finalized.
School starts. Classes are fine and DD is hanging in for now, but doesn't have any of the software she needs for her Chromebook or we requested. Only very basic accommodations. They're supposed to be doing a HIAT review. They did assign her a case manager, which DD told me, but they haven't contacted me yet. I'm trying to get things in place for her before classes get too nuts and she gets behind. I get that the start of school is crazy. But how much should I be pushing to get things moving? It's so irritating to keep sending emails, cc'ing the principal and getting nowhere. Email the parents back!! |
Call another IEP meeting. |
Normal. Get an attorney and send her with her own computer with what she needs. |
So if they keep ignoring me, I can just call another IEP meeting and then they HAVE to meet with me? |
You should request another IEP meeting. I think they have to schedule it within 30 days. |
You need to do it in writing but yes they have x days to comply. I think it’s 30. Check wrightslaw.com |
If you're in MCPS you can also contact Resolution and Compliance or the special education supervisor for your school if the school team is not being responsive. |
You don't need an IEP meeting.
You need an HIAT consultation and execution https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/hiat-tech/consultation/ |
File a complaint with the department of education in your state. |
IME, except where the IEP required case manager communication with a parent, it didn’t happen. The communication was with the student.
Do they have a date for the HIAT? |
I requested communication with the case manager and they said no problem, ofc, how often do you want it? And I’ve gotten nothing.
I’ve heard nothing about a HIAT meeting so I don’t know it’s happening or not. I know they don’t deal directly with parents; the request has to come from the school, which is why it was one of the first things I asked for when we sat down for the IEP. I’m not hopeful that they will give her anything we’ve requested but at least we made the request. If I don’t hear anything in a couple days, I will call her counselor directly. I have heard good things about her. But she is out quite a bit. |
I’d call the IEP meeting now- in writing- often times that gets them in gear and it will be resolved without needing that, but if it doesn’t they must comply and you have that option in the works. |

Never ever just call, do everything in writing. Call for follow up sure, but it doesn’t count if it’s not in writing. |
