Anyone else alarmed by the number of shootings in Montgomery County recently?
It seems like everyday I see an article with another shooting—this morning it was Twinbrook, and earlier this week it was Germantown, Gaithersburg, and Silver Spring. I’m basically a lifelong county resident (aside from stints elsewhere for college/grad school) and I don’t recall ever seeing so much violent, serious crime. I wish the news reports would always include names along with demographic data on age, race, etc. I vaguely recall that police departments tracked this info back in the day and fed it into a national database, but that tidbit comes from research I did back in the early 90s for a school project. |

Weekly crime summaries are here:
https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/pol/data/weekly-crime-summaries.html When the suspects are not known and at large, they list the race and gender of the suspect when known. If they made an arrest, they list age and name. Then you can look up in MD Court Case Search to see race. |

Yes I’m concerned, but it’s not just MoCo. Guns are easily accessible EVERYWHERE and any fool can get one. It’s terrifying.

What’s the year over year year-to-date?
I don’t feel like it’s any different his year so I’m not going to bother compiling myself. If anything, I feel like there is less crime. |
| I do worry that Trump's focus on crime in DC might push criminals into Arlington and MoCo, but I'm not sure that this is happening yet. |
I’m curious to see how 2025 compares with 2024, but we will need to wait on that data. But a quick google search shows a lot of shootings just over the last two weeks. Plus stabbings. It’s a lot, and I bet the 2025 numbers are worse than 2024. |
We’ve always had our own criminals in the county along with criminals from DC, PG, wherever coming into MoCo to settle scores. |
| I mean it's Maryland... |

In just the last week (the first week of September which isn’t included in your data), someone was shot (last night) in Twinbrook, 2 people were shot on Friday night in SS, and I believe 3 were shot on Wednesday night in multiple areas in Gaithersburg. I think there might have been another one earlier in the week.
It’s the seemingly daily news of another shooting (or multiple shootings) that prompted me to post. And not every shooting results in a death/homicide, so that impacts the data. Plus we had the stabbings in SS in recent weeks. By any measure, it’s a lot. |
If you import and welcome the third world, there should be zero surprise they bring their culture with them. So glad I got out of MoCo. It was such an amazing place in the early 2000, but has gone downhill fast. |
| Montgomery is shedding its stiff, stodgy UMC whitebread reputation and is becoming more vibrant and diverse. |
You got out too soon. Since the early 2000s, my property value has gone up by approximately 2.5X in Bethesda. Even back then, people were saying its best days were behind it, so I guess the naysayers never quit. |
| There was another murder on Friday . I think Moco will break its record this year. |
It's nowhere close to its record. |
