[VA] Southwestern food (authentic)

Anonymous
What are some good places for real non-Americanized southwestern or Sonoran food in NoVA?

I am not looking for Americanized food drowning in sour cream, guacamole, and/or cheese sauce. If one likes that, it is all fine, but that is not this question.

For authentic E/SE Asian, 7 Corners has options. What are the equivalent places for southwestern?

You'd have to make your own. Most places don't sell "authentic" as that would be things like menudo, pork and corn with tomatoes and rice, chili relleno con queso, bean burrito with flour tortilla (the only time flour tortillas are used by non-Jewish Mexicans), or really basic refried beans and corn tortillas, or frijoles ranchero with tortillas. Plenty of fresh limes and maybe some pickled pig skins.
And a bottled Coke or beer of course.

I’m from Tucson. You can’t get Sonoran food around here.

There are places that I can find individual things. Surprisingly uncle Julio’s has really good refried beans and their fresh tortillas are also good, although not lkke the classic stretchy Sonoran tortillas.

It’s not like Asian food because the DMV just doesn’t have a huge contingent of Mexican immigrants especially not from north western Mexico. A lot of the “Mexican” restaurants around here are run by Salvadorans, as there is a large Salvadoran community, or even Sputh Americans.

This question comes up on this forum about once every 5 years so you can search and see what people have suggested in the past. I think there’s a NM style place someplace in NoVa (Anita’s?) that some people like.

I don’t think you’re Sonoran. Sonoran use flour tortillas for most purposes — not just bean burritos.

I’ve never seen picked pig skins in a Sonoran restaurant. Pork is rarely used in Sonoran cooking. Machaca, carne seca, green chile burros, red chile burros, refried beans, yes chile relleno, yes menudo but that’s a breakfast item.

Thanks fir helpful but depressing response from 20:01. I miss Albuquerque. Good food but affordable.
