As I have gotten older, currently mid-50βs I suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome primarily when lying down in bed.
It has made it difficult -> impossible to sleep and I would like to know if anyone on here has any tips or ideas on how to minimize this w/o possibly seeing a medical professional? I am tired of losing sleep over this but will see a M.D. but hope only as a last resort. Any suggestions on what I can do first? TIA! |
| If you take Benadryl or Melatonin, you should stop as they made it so much worse for me. |

My rls is worse when my ferritin is low so if it seems unusually bad I always take iron and that often seems to help.
Magnesium glycinate before bed also helps. |
OP Here: Yes I have heard that a lack of iron could be a factor. |

Change your antidepressants if you take them.
This is a very common side effect of SSRIs since your brainβs chemicals are the source of your discomfort. |
When I get restless leg, I take iron. Goes away! |
| I take a single Tylenol before bed and it helps a lot to keep it from acting up. |
This is a common side effect of Zoloft. I would change the dosage or possibly switch to another non-SSRI medication. And I would take some iron vitamins close to bedtime too. Dopamine is a huge factor in restless leg syndrome with iron deficiency a close second. GL. |
| Magnesium supplements and epsom baths help. Interesting re: the iron as I had low ferritin and have recently worked to bring that up. RLS is less pronounced. |
| Leg stretches helped me a lot. |
| After years I finally found out it was low iron that caused that. |
There's also an association between restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea. Consider a fitness tracker device that can measure sleep quality. |
| Mine is bad and starts evening before I even get into bed. Pramipaxole is the only thing that has worked for me. |

For my dad, exercise was key. Not on one hour, but thought the day.
Why donβt you want to see a doctor for help? |
