iPad/Chromebook restrictions

Does your DC’s school place time limitations (i.e., they automatically shut down at a certain time preventing any usage even to complete homework) on school issued iPad/chromebooks? If so, for what grade(s) and what time do they shutdown?

no that would just be bizarre

Yes, it is bizzare and yet, my DCs school is going to do so. I would like to know if any other school has done this.

Ours does not. Seems more helpful to teach the kids responsible tech use.

Private school?

If so you need to remove your kid.

Absolutely a stupid idea to do this.

Yes, private. Hard to just remove at the beginning of the school year with a $50K+ plus contract. But I agree, an absolutely stupid idea.

Our k-8 only allows chromebooks during school hours. I wholeheartedly agree and support. They are property of the school.

What time do they shut down?

I can only assume this means they are not required to use them do their homework, right? If so, then OK. But if they need them to do homework, how does that work?

9pm.

Sounds like this school is trying to get students off their devices around bedtime. This is in line with every research study about how screentime affects people of all ages, but can you say why it's important to you to have the iPad accessible for your kid at later hours?

9pm.

What grades? This seems reasonable for elementary; homework shouldn’t be going past 9 pm.

Because my kid plays travel sports with varying practice times and we don’t live in DC and have a long commute to the school. We have to be able to do homework when we can. Had we known this was the school’s policy we would have looked at other schools. We need a school that’s a good fit, and one that wants to police when my children sleep isn’t it.

Middle School. I had no objection for lower grades, as homework was minimal. But in Middle School it ramps up heavily. A 9pm cutoff isn’t going to foster success.

I wish my kids school did this. I think it’s crazy they give middle schoolers a device with unlimited access to YouTube. I would love the device to shut off and I’d love for their to be a time limit on browsers.
