(OP again) I posted the above with the link that has a chart of athletic department debt among major universities. UCal-Berkeley's debt is the highest in the nation at about $450,000,000 with no way out. It would be irresponsible for the Big Ten Conference to consider Cal for membership as it is drowning in athletic department debt. Astonishing. Absolutely irresponsible mismanagement of Cal athletic department from a financial standpoint. The contrast with ultra-wealthy Stanford University is staggering. Yes to Stanford in the Big ten Conference at a reduced payout; NO ! to Cal regardless of payout. |
| I never realized that those schools started their fall quarter so late as compared to trimester schools. Still Oregon and Washington typically have good turnouts for all of their home games. UCLA is a different matter. |
How on earth does an athletic department rack up a half billion in debt? Absolutely mind boggling. |
Major stadium renovation or new facilities/stadium. |
They rebuilt their stadium. |

“How on earth does an athletic department rack up a half billion in debt? Absolutely mind boggling.“
That’s chump change in California. San Francisco spends nearly that much per year pretending to be solving its un-domiciled resident situation. |

Stanford’s excellence in non revenue sports and lack of football media power is a huge negative. Other big ten schools like to win conference championships in non revenue sports so Stanford
1) costs everybody distribution money 2) makes it hard/impossible to win non rev conference championships Makes everybody’s situation worse |

Great chart from Sports Illustrated dated July 14, 2022. Chart ranks all 69 Power 5 Conference teams in several categories including academics, attendance, and--most important--viewership. Scroll to bottom of the article to see all 69 Power 5 Conference schools ranked in 5 categories: https://si.com/college/2022/07/14/power-5-desirability-rankings-sec-big-ten-acc 3 schools are tied at #67 for worst viewership (Duke, Boston College, & Rutgers). |

(OP again)
From the Sports Illustrated chart (link provided in post above), we learn that Stanford is valuable to broadcast networks based on the key factor of viewership. Sports Illustrated ranked all 69 Power 5 Conference teams for viewership; Stanford was tied at a respectable #24 which is better than several Big Ten Conference teams. Big Ten Conference teams rank for viewership: 1) Ohio State tied at #2 with Notre Dame 2) Michigan tied at #5 with Georgia 3) USC #9 4) Penn State #10 5) Wisconsin tied at #12 6) Michigan State #15 7) U Washington #16 7) Nebraska #16 9) U Oregon #18 10) Iowa #21 11) Stanford #24 12) UCLA #28 13) Northwestern #32 14) Indiana #36 15) Maryland #41 16) Purdue #45 17) Minnesota #49 18) Illinois #58 19)Rutgers #67 Based on viewership as calculated by Sports Illustrated, Stanford would be a solid addition to the Big Ten Conference. |
| UCal-Berkeley would not be a solid addition to the Big Ten Conference based on its viewership rank of tied at #58 with Illinois. Additionally, Cal athletic department has serious financial issues. |
| Crazy idea of the day. If Clemson can be flipped, ACC let's FSU out for a fee --- some reasonable number. Adds Cal, Stanford, SMU, and ND. |

These are the numbers from last season https://medium.com/run-it-back-with-zach/which-college-football-programs-were-the-most-watched-in-2022-94eca4f6acbd Stanford #47. |
| Sports Illustrated is now reporting that ESPN offered the Pac-12 up to $30 million per school, but the Pac-12 wanted more and countered at $50 million per school at which time budget cutting ESPN stopped negotiating and waved goodbye to the Pac-12. |
The conferences are aligning around football, but that SI report doesn’t paint the full picture. Schools like UNC, Duke, Kansas, etc. have basketball programs that bring in as much revenue and viewership as many of the football programs at other schools. |
Thank you. I think that this link was posted much earlier in this thread. Great information. Sports Illustrated used a different method for its calculations; the numbers that you have linked are better. Thanks. I wanted to show the Sports Illustrated numbers because I think that the Big Ten Conference should reconsider Stanford and that Stanford would now be available at a bargain price. Stanford would add academic & research prestige to the Big Ten Conference along with some traction in the San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose TV media market. |
