“At Wednesday’s FCPS job fair, the district is not only hiring teachers but also teacher trainees. Applicants for the trainee position do not need a college degree, only at least 30 college credits, which is about one school year of full-time schooling.”

This is pretty sad. Imagine coming to FCPS for the great schools and finding out that your teacher is a trainee with a year's worth of college credits. Id be even more pissed after just graduating with my Education degree.

Yup. My rising college sophomore has 30 credits. An education major could literally stop going to college full time and save loads of money.

But half the teachers leave after 5 years, so she’s just be unemployed 24 yo with no degree.

But potentially 5 years of work experience.

Yes a lot of schools are fully staffed except SPED. My school still needs 2 classroom teachers.

What does that matter when every job posted requires a bachelors degree?

Most parents want babysitters....they told teachers to leave they don't care.

Were they speaking of Fauquier county....the FCPS list says otherwise.

The FCPS list doesn't update immediately. Hiring, paperwork, etc. takes awhile. And so does the updating process.

Part of the teacher trainer programs is the requirement to finish a degree anyway

A lot of schools need Gen Ed teachers too. 99 percent in a large district like this is fooling. My school has three openings for Gen ED teachers while my friend’s has one.

Yes and they were reporting that the new trainee program requires just 30 credit hours and no degree!!! WTF!

Is this a joke? I’m a teacher in FCPS and haven’t heard such a thing.

Just shoddy reporting. The Teacher Trainee info online clearly says candidates need college degrees .... looks like Fox5 pulled that paragraph from the article.

I guess. They said it live at the actual event. So who knows.

I threw it in google sheets and ran a countif on the number of "apply" buttons and found 530. So, minimum 530 positions, but like pp said many schools only have 1 vacancy listed for a grade range and may have multiple positions open (in prior years they'd list it multiple times). Probably significantly higher than 530 at the end of the day.

It is probably around 630.

Oh it’s got to be more than just 100 extra. At my school alone, one sped listing is 5 teachers.

I always had tons of respect for teachers, but I now have both admiration and frankly, sympathy for them. They are in a no-win situation and admin does NOT have their backs. It is a thankless task.

Years ago, I subbed while I was waiting for my license to process. I thought subbing was the most miserable job I ever had. The “work” was easier as a sub but the students were so much more difficult. I prefer being the classroom teacher despite the lack of support, lack of supplies, lack of curriculum…

Your comment reminds me of a day during my student teaching placement where my mentor teacher was out sick but a substitute was still required to sit in the classroom. So she sat in the back on her phone all day while I taught the classes. The absurdity of that situation reminded me how much teachers must sacrifice on their path to attain licensure and then once they start working. Needless to say, I did not become a teacher.

I think teachers should be given grants, free tuition, and/or reimbursement if they devote 5 years to the state.
