| I know a guy who makes about 400k who just proposed to his fiance who works an hourly retail job (but has a college degree). It just occurred to me that all the other couples I know make fairly even salaries with the man usually earning slightly more. I’m wondering why he didn’t go for a woman with a 6 figure job. |
| Troll. But I do think income is more important for millennial and younger men. |
| Um maybe he loves her. |
|
Did you read Cinderella as a kid?
|
| My ex owned a building here and properties abroad. I was broke at the time. He said he could support me but he had a wandering eye yet still wanted to be with me. I'm hot though. |
| They want a woman to make the same salary as them + take care of all household and child duties. |
| This has been a thing for a long time. Assortative mating/dating. Is he kind of a loser despite the salary? The standards of a hot and fun woman who makes 350k are pretty high... |
| In big cities, liberal parts of the country, a guy in this scenario usually had a million red flags including major self esteem issues and misogyny. But now I live in a rich part of Florida, and it happens all the time. Like, often the woman at the top of the social hierarchy went to podunk local U for communications, worked retail or something super low pay and low glamour, but she’s blond and hot and marries a doctor and now she’s in a $3m house ruling the social scene. She often grew up rich though. It is truly bizarre to me because I have only lived in places with assertive mating, and didn’t think this had been a viable path since 1980 but apparently it is. The guys down here who choose that woman are less of a red flag than the men in the NE, but they still don’t see women as real people with agency. |
| Then they will find someone younger when women reach 35+ |
| It’s called assortive mating. People marry people like them, and it’s been ratcheting up in America. So yes, an example like yours has become quite uncommon. |
|
They say assortative mating has caused the explosion in autism (nerds marrying each other.)
Both my sister and I married beneath us financially and came to regret it. My mom married waaaay up but didn't bother to teach us to do the same. My cousin, who is not book smart at all but knows how to play the game, married a schlubby immigrant who has an estate with servants in his home country. |
But if she grew up rich that’s different. She probably has access to social circles he doesn’t. Clubs, etc. |
+1 Think Lisa from Real Housewives of Miami. They are the first wives. Or, the husband grew up humble and wants a down to earth woman (like Matt Damon’s situation). |
| Women don't need jobs the same way men do. |
| It's never been uncommon most people marry within their tax bracket always have. . There are exceptions but the Cinderella is fairytale for a reason. |
