| is this a thing for real? DC said it's required and wanted it mailed. I've never been asked or needed to show the card for any job application ever. But I've never applied a VA school/govt job either. |
|
No absolutely no job requires your SS card.
Just the number not the physical card that is absurd. |
| wanted to add it's a part-time on-campus job not even a regular one just for occasional event/activity needs |
| No, that’s not a thing OP. Is it a legit job? Or is he asking for his SSN card for his I9 verification? |
| Sounds like I9 verification. If he doesn’t have a passport to show, a SS card would be one of the acceptable documents to prove employment eligibility. |
|
There are jobs that require presentation of original documents.
I had to show an original card to get my son his Michigan Driver's license. Two forms of i.d. the other could be a passport and an original birth certificate. I believe I have shown xeroxes of my card when starting new jobs. And maybe had the real one available. |
This. Mine used passport. |
This. It's likely one of the documents on a list of choices. |
| if it's for I9 then might as well mail the passport over. good to have another form of ID handy nowadays. |
| I have never had to show a SS card, which is good, because I e never had one. Good grief. Is this something I should figure out how to get for my kid? I assume it’s like birth and marriage certificates, where you can pay for an official certified copy from Richmond or whatever? |
Yes. You should have gotten one when your kid was a baby. |
| Yes. Older child had to show original document (I mailed her the SS card) for I9 verification last year for a job in one state, and this week my younger child in college in a different state needed theirs for the same reason for a part time on campus job. |
| Yes, this is a thing. Not everyone has a passport |
| thanks all |

Look at the I-9 form. You can produce one item from List A or one from B and one from C.
