How can someone with a Civil Engineering degree make a lot of money.

Anonymous
Posting here because my hijack attempt didn’t work. Civil-engineering-major DS just finished his junior summer project management internship with a major general contractor. They made him a permanent offer. He decided not to get his master’s in structural and accept the job. He may want to get his MBA down the line as he wants to make a lot of money. How does a civil engineer make a lot of money? Become a property developer?

Commercial construction. He's on the right track with a big contractor.

Do what you love. I am always skeptical about a kid who "wants to make a lot of money." I understand not wanting to be poor and wanting to afford nice things, but they should do what excites them.

I would say do the project management job with the GC and then get into real estate. Plenty of money to make there. But be patient.

What would he do in real estate? He will definitely take the PM job and work a couple of years. I think making a lot of money is what excites him. He doesn’t get that from me, artist here.

Work for a large real estate developer. Commercial or residential. Knowing the behind the scenes of what a contractor does could be very helpful. He has worked hard to get an engineering degree. This is a way to apply it.

You don't just go into a job and sit at a desk and make money. You have to actually do something well to make money. So what he does should be something he enjoys and finds interesting. That being said, no kid says "I want to be an equity derivatives sales person" yet plenty of people do that and make a lot of money.

I know this is an anonymous board and you are asking to look for ideas. I'm just saying that though there are some people who like to hear it (there are still some "Greed is good" types left on Wall Street), most people hear a kid say "I want to make a lot of money" and it sounds very striver-y.

Thanks. This is very helpful, unlike the day drinker above. What is this board, if not a bunch of mommies crowd-sourcing info?

Bill Gates originally got rich by money asking her rich friends to buy his toy project.

This is easy…sell the Brooklyn Bridge to someone.

DD is a CE major and her dad is high up in a global GC firm.

exDH's biggest complaint about college graduates is that they know the academic stuff but they haven't spent enough time in the field. They don't have the ability to move tasks around because they don't know what the order of trades is, what specific tasks can be moved to other trades, or even how a project is actually built (they know the theoretical)

Big money will come from being at the top of the food chain in a large commercial company. Side hustle money can come from having his own stamp.

Yup. Real estate development. Majoring in civil engineering will be valued and respected. I recommend working either in internships or entry level jobs for a civil engineer or home builder and getting on-the-ground technical experience. An MBA or Masters in Real Estate from a respected program is usually required for executive level jobs. He should reach out to execs and ask to meet them for lunch so he can pick their brain on how best to plot a career. Everyone will have different advice, but it will be worthwhile.
