I live in a bottom apartment - - above me live a couple w/two small children.
They moved in about six mos. ago. The issue? They have a very squeaky bed & I can hear it shaking multiple times a wk (like 4-5x.) It happens in odd hrs, like 1 or 3 in the AM. I work M-F + have to be up at 5 every morning. Being awoken by a shaking roof and squeaky bed is something I tolerated for the past 6 mos., I didn’t want to have issues w/these neighbors but now that I am going to work tired I have had it! I do not know them and rarely if ever see them outside. I have hit the ceiling w/a broomstick a few times but to no avail. I am at the point where I am seriously considering making a complaint to the property manager because lack of uninterrupted sleep has made me cranky. I wish I could move to a SFH but am unable to afford it as I live alone (F.) I have also tried white noise and ear plugs but I can still hear the vibration from the ceiling. Help! I dread nights now! |

I hate to say this because I am very sympathetic to your issue, however, there's nothing you or the landlord can do, unless you can shell out money and surprise them with a brand new bed.
I think on top of having a white noise machine, get a fan. Fans actually have a vibration of their own and hopefully that will cover the vibration coming from your ceiling. |
| I should add, hitting the ceiling with the broomstick is probably the worst thing you can do because actions like that backfire more frequently than help because now you are the one annoying the neighbors. And that's not gonna make them want to stop, they may become worse |
| Agree that you need to incorporate something with a little vibration into your life, but not in a creepy way. Like a fan or vibrating pillow or bed frame with massage mode. It's actually really pleasant to feel it once you get used to it. And hey, if your neighbours feel it/it annoys them, you can then have 'the conversation'. |

I would record the sounds on video before telling your LL.
That way if it is really loud then your LL will empathize. Also, your neighbors will definitely know it was you who lodged a complaint. So they may retaliate like slash your car tires or egg your windows. People who are inconsiderate enough to not care who they are waking up are likely to have internal issues and will likely act out. SMH. If they keep waking you up the management/leasing needs to evict them. |
| No advice but I don’t know how they have time to have sex five times a week with little kids. Actually maybe that’s why it’s 3am. Maybe offer to babysit for half hour every few days so they can do it then and not at 3am? |

A loud fan or white noise machine doesn’t work? I’d experiment with different kinds. We have a big fan that is so unbelievably loud there is no way it wouldn’t drown that noise out.
Any possibility of moving your bed so it isn’t presumably right underneath? I’m guessing not, but thought I’d throw it out there. Or if your bed is touching the wall, move it off the wall a little if the vibration is an issue? It should help. The landlord isn’t going to do anything so I would not bother. |
| Talk to them and ask them to see their alarm for 5 am. Problem solved! |

Tell them. They might need to add an area rug under their bed.
Our upstairs neighbors used to have loud sex in their kitchen. It would shake our lighting fixtures. (Very old building). We finally knocked on the door mid shag to ask them when they’d be done so I could make dinner. They used the bedroom after that. |

I moved to top floor. My next move is 2-bedroom on top floor, so I can sleep in the middle room and not hear my neighbors at all.
I'm surprised you didn't complain about the kids being loud. I had young neighbors and they had sex day and night. |
| Just move to another unit. |
I don’t think the upstairs neighbors are using vibrators; that’s not the issue. The issue them having vigorous intercourse on a squeaky bed. |
Yes...everyone understands this. |
