| It's been going on all evening and is now 10:41pm. We have kids who need to get up early for school and parents for work. At what point would you call the non-emergency police line and complain? This is loud, throbbing, dance music that we can hear from inside our house. Normally (on a weekend), this wouldn't be a big deal, but it's the middle of the week and I'm getting pissed. |
|
You let them know first, that you'd like them to turn it down. You don't immediately call a non-emergency number about it, because one instance of noise before 11pm is not a police matter and that would escalate the situation.
You knock on their door and say "I'm so sorry, could you turn the music down, our kids have school in the morning and can't sleep". Or you put a note in the door. You buy noise cancelling ear phones as well. |
| Someone is being murdered, that's why the sound is up, so you don't hear the screams. |
|
How often does this happen? Is it a one off? If so, I’d let it go unless it keeps happening.
Also, if you are white and they are black or Latino, I especially would not complain unless and until it becomes a problem. If they are white, I’d wait till midnight to complain. Is it possible parents are out of town and teenagers are throwing a party? |
Pattern not problem |
| Are you really considering calling the police instead of asking them them to turn down the music? If so, you are a selfish lazy drain on society. |
|
I don’t care if I’m wrong about this, but I’m never knocking on a neighbor’s door to ask them to turn the music down.
Tell them kids have school in the morning? They’re not stupid. Why would me requesting this make any difference? I wouldn’t be telling them anything they didn’t already know. The noise ordinance is me requesting it. Just call the non emergency line. The police will knock on the door and ask them to turn it down. It’s the same thing but you don’t put yourself in a conflict with neighbors. |
| Call 911. |

If you live in an apartment/condo, is there a manager or security patrol that you can contact?
You may not be able to file a complaint until business hours but I would definitely do so so this doesn’t happen again. Make sure you can remain anonymous as people may try to retaliate in anger. If you live in a house, you always COULD call the authorities however know that you will not remain anonymous ➕ that your neighbors will get angry that you called on them. A better solution may be to walk over & kindly ask them to turn down the music as your family needs to get up early the next morning. A decent neighbor will apologize and oblige. |

| I wouldn’t tolerate it any day of the week, anytime. That’s ridiculous. I’d call the police and report it. |
I wouldn’t chance it, those people might be armed. Let the police do their job |
You are wrong. If will depend on the noise ordinance time in the jurisdiction OP lives in. If it’s after that time you can call the non emergency police. If it’s a one off, like a birthday party, graduation etc I might either ask them to turn it down or just suck it up. If they’re thoughtless every week I’d call the police |
| When it's a one time thing, I'd just suck it up. But, we are generally also the people who can just let noise settle in the background and still be able to fall asleep. And DS seems to have taken after us as well. |
