Late DC Enrollment

*you may see this post twice as I’m new to the site, still learning ☺️*

Hello! I was born and raised in DC. I moved to Waldorf many years ago but always worked in DC still.
My grandmother recently passed & left her townhouse in SW to me and I just moved in. I’m good but I know this will be a big transition for my daughter.

I’m not up-to-date on DC schools anymore. My daughter attended Rocketship from PreK to 1st grade, then we left. She’s now going to 8th grade. I don’t know which schools are good or bad. I know since I’m late to registration. It’s slim pickings now.

My waitlist is as follows:
Browne EC #8
Eliot-Hine #2
Stuart-Hodson #34 (not optimistic)
Friendship Blow-Pierce #5
Friendship Chamberlin #7
Boundary School is Jefferson Middle

I saw BASIS mentioned a lot on here, but I didn’t bother because I’m SURE we won’t get past that waitlist this late in.

Are these good schools? Chances of being taken off waitlist?

UPDATE:
Sojourner Truth #5
John Francis #38

Think I’m going to cross fingers for Eliot-Hine and Sojourner. If not, Jefferson it is

Welcome (back?) to SW!
You’re in a weird situation timing wise but the Eliot Hine #2 waitlist spot is promising. I would try to tour Eliot Hine and Jefferson to see how you feel about the vibes there. I live in SW and have spent time at both schools, though more so Jefferson. My neighbors like it but I do see a lot of kids acting up outside the school. I’m not sure EH is “better” enough to make it worth the commute but I get the sense many prefer it. I don’t know as much about the other schools.

They both feed to Eastern High School, which is not popular on this site but may be a good fit for your child. They have an IB program that is popular. Or if your daughter has excellent grades, plan to try for Walls or Banneker or McKinley. Those are all application + lottery — but no longer a test if that’s what you remember from growing up here. I think they use 7th grade grades and teacher recommendations, it might be hard to get those from a non DCPS but you could ask MySchoolDC or one of the schools directly.

I saw advice to look at Sojourner Truth for a post lottery waitlist if you want another option. But that would be a bit more complicated to commute to from SW.

Good luck, and I’m sorry for the loss of your grandmother.

Re: above. You can compare the performance measures of schools here - Truth does look slightly better than EH, which is a bit more slightly better than Jefferson. Try it with your other schools on the list. https://schoolreportcard.dc.gov/compare

But definitely try to get on campus to check it out in real life, too.

I would just add every middle school you can commute to and see what happens. Jefferson will be totally fine, although I do think EH is a little better, do not worry because you have a solid option in Jefferson!

Thank you. Losing her was a big hit and I had no idea that before her passing she put me as the beneficiary. It’s a blessing yet a sad feeling being in this home w/o her.

I’m a product of DCPS and back in my day, Jefferson was a little rough. I noticed the building was renovated but does that mean the school really changed? That’s why I’m on the fence.

My job is in the DuPont Circle area so I’m not against anything that way too.
I applied schools my cousin recommended because she’s a DC teacher so I trusted her opinion. But I’m now learning about the feeder schools. So I’m trying to map it all out & praying I pick a good school as I know her final years are quickly approaching.

It’s a lot of schools between SW and my job in DuPont Circle but definitely solid idea when I’m late in the game like this

Well, I'm not trying to tell you Jefferson is fantastic or that there's zero "rough" about it. You seem to have a realistic understanding that you're very late to the process so options are limited. It will be okay. You can forget about Browne, it's way worse than Jefferson.

You’re right, no school is going to be perfect. I think I’m projecting my own nerves of my daughter being in an entirely new and different environment. I remember needing tough skin in DC schools so I’m … nervous.
But it’s also been almost 20years since I got out of HS too

I do sincerely believe DCPS overall has improved since then! But that doesn't mean any one school is better or worse.

Deep breaths middle school mama. It'll be ok.

I would not worry about feeder schools for 8th. You wont get Deal or Hardy at this point and I would not very much want to commute there from the Jefferson boundary anyways. Your cousin’s recommendations pretty much covered what is nearby. For high school - Research the DCPS application schools, Eastern, MacArthur (which this year had lots of lottery spots), and then maybe also other charter school options like Friendship, Truth, Thurgood Marshall and/or private high school options too.

If you work near Dupont Circle, add John Francis. I do not think there is anything else that might have space available that I would seriously consider over your current options.
