Welcome (back?) to SW! You’re in a weird situation timing wise but the Eliot Hine #2 waitlist spot is promising. I would try to tour Eliot Hine and Jefferson to see how you feel about the vibes there. I live in SW and have spent time at both schools, though more so Jefferson. My neighbors like it but I do see a lot of kids acting up outside the school. I’m not sure EH is “better” enough to make it worth the commute but I get the sense many prefer it. I don’t know as much about the other schools. They both feed to Eastern High School, which is not popular on this site but may be a good fit for your child. They have an IB program that is popular. Or if your daughter has excellent grades, plan to try for Walls or Banneker or McKinley. Those are all application + lottery — but no longer a test if that’s what you remember from growing up here. I think they use 7th grade grades and teacher recommendations, it might be hard to get those from a non DCPS but you could ask MySchoolDC or one of the schools directly. I saw advice to look at Sojourner Truth for a post lottery waitlist if you want another option. But that would be a bit more complicated to commute to from SW. Good luck, and I’m sorry for the loss of your grandmother.
Thank you. Losing her was a big hit and I had no idea that before her passing she put me as the beneficiary. It’s a blessing yet a sad feeling being in this home w/o her. I’m a product of DCPS and back in my day, Jefferson was a little rough. I noticed the building was renovated but does that mean the school really changed? That’s why I’m on the fence. My job is in the DuPont Circle area so I’m not against anything that way too. I applied schools my cousin recommended because she’s a DC teacher so I trusted her opinion. But I’m now learning about the feeder schools. So I’m trying to map it all out & praying I pick a good school as I know her final years are quickly approaching.
Well, I'm not trying to tell you Jefferson is fantastic or that there's zero "rough" about it. You seem to have a realistic understanding that you're very late to the process so options are limited. It will be okay. You can forget about Browne, it's way worse than Jefferson.
You’re right, no school is going to be perfect. I think I’m projecting my own nerves of my daughter being in an entirely new and different environment. I remember needing tough skin in DC schools so I’m … nervous. But it’s also been almost 20years since I got out of HS too
I do sincerely believe DCPS overall has improved since then! But that doesn't mean any one school is better or worse. Deep breaths middle school mama. It'll be ok.
Thank You 🙏🏾
