New High School Teacher Contract Times

Anonymous
Does anyone know why they changed the contract times for high school teachers? Depending on the school they were 7:30-3, 7:40-3:10, or 7:45-3:15. They are now 8-3:30. Teachers only have ten minutes to get ready for students in the morning. This is also going to put a lot of teachers coming into the school parking lot while students, busses, and parents are dropping their kids off.

Well, they could choose to come in earlier like a responsible professional.

I'm sure most will. But you can't force people to work before contract and lots of teachers are going to show up at 8.

Didn't take long, either.

My dh is there 30 mins ahead of contract time, no matter when that is.

A lot of us live very far away from where we teach because we cannot afford to live closer. My commute is an hour if I leave by 6:15 but if I leave only 10-15 minutes later, it's 90 minutes or more.

I think its weird that there are "contract times". Its a professional job. Professionals should be trusted to show up on time to do their job and to leave at an appropriate time after work. They don't need to be micromanaged like this.

+1 this is why teachers feel done. So disrespectful.

Taught school for a long time. The only ones who "worked to the contract" were the union reps.

Long time teacher here and not many of us know or care about the official contract hours. We are there well before 8 to get ready for the day. This is not an issue for most of us. Some get these very early to beat traffic and use the mornings to get work done.

I taught for 18 years. I was there at 715 and left at 400.

No one “works to the rule”

The only people who ever get there right when school starts are people who have 1st period planning or if they’re running late.

Honestly it’s just weird this whole thread…why did they change teacher hours. They didn’t the majority show up early and leave late. And on Fridays leave shortly after all the kids are gone.

Lol. We have to sign in every morning by 7:30. Our admin stands there ready to switch the sign in book to the late book at 7:31. My former admin would stand there and we'd have to use the red pen of shame to sign in when we were late. And they wonder why nobody wants to teach.

I have the same problem with the afternoon commute. I liked to leave right at 3, shortly after the kids left. Now I have to wait a half hour.

You have to sign in? That’s odd.

It is the FCPS equivalent of when politicians vote in an unrealistic minimum wage increase, so the McDonald's cuts all hours by just enough so they are still paying everyone the exact same as they did before the raise.
