DC has the following stats:

AP test results score is 4 in AP Biology AP Chemistry AP Calculus sub, ap calculus bc, and AP world history ,AP English language, DE English, weighted Gpa 4.05 to end of Junior year SAT superscore 1530, high course rigor, track captain, science olympiad regional finalist. Will take AP Physics, AP Statistics, AP Govt, AP Multivariable Calculus , and DE English Senior year.
What are the chances for UVA , VA tech , for Physics major and CS minor. Are they still reaches?

Is it strong enough with this Gpa for any top 20?
He has MIT in mind …. I know thats a very tough call.

Thanks.

Op here- that should read as score of 4 in all of the 6 AP exams.

All those APs and only a 4.05 weighted?

Yes - has a lot of Bs as final grades.

Mit is no joke. I'm not even sure it would be the right place for a student that is not confidently getting A's in high school. It was definitely the most intimidating school my student looked at and we looked at a lot of schools.

Personally I know MIT is pretty much out of the picture.
I am trying to see if he could even make it to UVA .

Is he in Virginia? I don’t think the SAT alone will get him in. They like to see straight As or close to it.

Yes, he is in state.

Yes, he is in state.

Then it really depends on how he compares to his classmates who’ve taken the same level of rigor.

If it’s any consolation, my kid’s on the flip side of this. Much higher weighted GPA and 5s on many of those AP tests, but can’t seem to break 1400 on the SAT.

Op here
I never expected his weighted gpa would be at 4.05

I think almost all top 20s, if not all, are out of reach with that weighted GPA. The only difference in my opinion would be if he is highly ranked at his school, he is hooked or from a geographically desirable location. For example, a weighted 4.05 gpa for a kid from S. Dakota will be bumped ahead of a kid from FCPS with that gpa.

His test score is great, but it will absolutely not counter that gpa.

OP - what is the GPA trend for your DC? Are grades trending upward as the classes got more difficult or did the go down in junior year with more APs?

I think MIT is definitely out I'm afraid and most of the top 20 BUT if your DC's grades are on an "upward trajectory" it's possible that you could get VA tech with a strong Fall semester GPA. It's time to lock in but schools really like an upward trajectory and your DC's SAT score shows he has the intelligence. Some DCs just need that extra semester of senior year to mature and show study skills and academic growth!

MIT is out. But if he likes tech schools, consider RPI, RIT, WPI, and Drexel. If you Google "engineering for B students" you'll get a lot of choices.
