crib bumper pads to prevent pacifiers from falling off the crib?

Anonymous
1 year old DD would wake up crying in the middle of the night multiple times if she can't find her paci, which frequently falls out of her crib. I'm thinking of scattering pacis around in the crib, and getting a crib bumper pad so they don't fall onto the floor. I know crib bumper pads are not recommended since they can cause SIDS, but I think she's old enough that I won't have to worry about SIDS. Do you think this is a good idea? Any other options/ideas? Thanks!

Did the same thing around 6 months. I use a breathable bumper - gives you the desired paci-protection without the risk. Also, a traditional bumper would give your 1 year old something to use to climb out of the crib.

I had a thin bumper in a lot earlier than 1, and yes, it did help to keep the pacis in the crib. It also helped to keep fat little legs from getting stuck between the crib slats (happened with our first, and I thought we'd have to break the crib to free her).

We had the CPSC come out and look at our crib (and they said don't use it) and I asked - they said the thin bumpers are ok at that age as they are mobile - we have a target one - their brand and she ok'ed it till they start using it as a prop to climb out. They also make a breathable one but that was only good for us for a few months and then didn't do us any good as he'd bump his head and get mad. I only leave it 1/3 the way out and that usually is enough. Just stay away from the super padded.

The Ferber book says that sprinkling pacifiers does not end up working in the long run. It may be time to ditch the pacifier, before your child is old enough to demand it. Weaning a 2 yr old is tough business. IMO it's best done around 9-10 months.

I also used the breathable bumper

and she was much younger than 1. It worked great

Our bumper worked great for this purpose until DD could pull up, then would throw them gleefully out - one at a time - then wail when she realized what she had done. Two or three times a night. Now she's wise enough to keep them in.

I have a breathable bumper which I really like. I also scatter several pacifiers in the crib.

My son never really took to a pacifier but we had to get a breathable bumper early on to keep his arms and legs form getting stuck. Very happy with it!

We did the cozy wedge too.

We put a bumper pad up at around 6 months for that reason and it helped a great deal. DD is 2.5 years old and never used it to try to climb.

I use a pacifier clip (sp?).

no clips while sleeping please!!!! what if it wraps around the child's neck wrist finger... so dangerous!!!
