Debit card protection

Anonymous
I am middle aged and only have credit cards that I pay off in full every month because back when I opened them, credit cards had better fraud protection than debit cards.

I’ve read the fine print and it looks like debit card protection is akin to credit card protection now.

Has anyone had a fraudulent debit reversed from a debit cards before successfully?

I’m looking into finally getting one so appreciate any feedback from current debit card holders.

That may be true, but fundamentally the money IS removed from your checking account until investigation is complete, which means you may not have cash available for other needs. When it’s a credit card, it’s their money that is tied up, and I suppose your “credit” but it’s much more manageable

Don't use a debit card.

Yes, I have, many years ago. Capital One.

But, exactly as the 12:14 pp describes, the money was out of my checking account immediately (person bought online plane tix).

I was out several hundred dollars as a result for a number of days, I believe at/close to 10 days as permissible by law(?) while case under investigation.

I was credited the entire amount.

While a hassle, fortunately I was not living paycheck-to-paycheck and able to transfer in some savings in the meantime so that my "check" payments did not bounce.

After that, I switched to using my credit card for nearly everything, and pay it off monthly.

Just last week on vacation my credit card was compromised. A >$1000 order was attempted via Walmart online, and declined by my credit card company, fortunately. Only out the card in the meantime, and no cash.

12:24 again. TLDR; use your credit card.

I have but as PP said, the difference is WHO is out the money while the investigation/dispute is investigated.

Another issue that can come up are the various holds that can happen that often can take days until they are removed during which time that money isn't available for you to use with your card. See: https://www.creditninja.com/blog/how-to-remove-hold-on-a-debit-card/

Stick with a credit card and just pay the in full each month and you'll be in a better position from a consumer protection standpoint.

Debit cards are safer if you are dealing with small amounts and don't keep a ton on the card. If it's compromised, 10 min later you have a new one at the 7/11.
