Peloton Strength Classes - can I get strong?

Anonymous
I’ve been pretty consistent with taking 3 Peloton strength classes a week at home with heavy dumbbells (I have dumbbells that go up to 50 pounds each at home). I really like how I can do it on my own time and I enjoy the instructors. I’ve taken a few of the actual programs Pelotok offers (Discover Strength, Stronger You, etc) and I’m starting to actually track my weights so I can focus on progressive overload (before I was just doing what felt heavy enough as I got into the habit). I know how to find the right weight to use (be able to do 6-8 reps and not much more with good form). My spouse lifts weights at the gym and is telling me I need to go to a gym and start using barbells. I would like to do that eventually, but again, I really like that I can do the peloton classes on my own time and I really enjoy them! Am I wrong in thinking that I can get strong and lean through Peloton classes and heavy dumbbells (for example, I’m doing 25 pounds in each arm for squats right now) at home for at least the next six months without having to do barbell lifting at the gym?

I think you can. I did. Every week I do 2 upper, 2 lower workouts and 10 minute ab classes 4-5x week and I feel like I have gotten stronger. You need to push yourself on the weights - try heavy even when you don’t feel like you can.

For me, the Peloton workouts have been a game changer. If I just went to the gym with no instruction or game plan, I definitely would not work out as hard.

Do Andy Speers Total Strength programs. They’re great.

The ease of Peloton is what makes it appealing to me. It’s a lot easier to fit in a 20 minute strength than it is to go to the gym, work out (without a real plan), shower, etc. Even if it’s slower progress, I feel better for having worked out more consistently.

Also the music is great!

You absolutely can. This is what I’ve done for the past 8 years and making it easy to be consistent is the most important thing!

Yes! Rebecca Kennedy is my go to instructor for hypertrophy. Start with her 5 day split and repeat it every week for 6 weeks (then do the 3 day or unofficial 4 day splits). You can add some low impact cardio, barre classes, core work or yoga, if you want to really get after it.

You will see a difference!

OP here. Thanks everyone for piping in and confirming that Peloton is enough for my needs!

To the poster who asked if the app is worth it, I think it is, as long as you use it. I also have the bike which I plan to incorporate back into my fitness for VO2max training.

I love the app. I AirPlay it to a TV but it shows me my heart rates and treadmilll pace on the phone.

Love the app as well, I just play it on my phone.

I cannot stand lifting weights at the gym so for me, peloton or at least a class of some sort, e.g. orange theory, is the only way I'm going to actually do strength training. I love the splits on the peloton app.

Second this. I’m on my third round of the 5 day over the last 2 years (also had a baby in there) and feel like I’ve seen and felt results every time.

Her new express split (20 min classes) is excellent as well!
