This is my third kid (rising junior) and I have a pretty good understanding of the admissions process and don't need a ton of services. But I have a kid who doesn't trust my advice when it comes to which/how to organize extracurriculars (she wants to do everything and I want her to focus on what she enjoys and cut the stuff she's doing just for a line on the extracurricular table) and a dh whose preference would be for her to do no extracurriculars at all and focus on studying (somehow, he's much more engaged with the process this time around).
So I'm looking for someone we can all three meet with who could give good general advice and have some credibility. But not hold our hand through the whole process. Does this exist, or do all of these folks want a broader commitment (payment) from us? An online meeting would be easiest. |

What if the consultant you found actually agrees with your husband?
How would you know your DC would trust a stranger in a short one hour? |
| Yes hourly does exist. Idk who but it’s available. Tons of ppl are college counselors now. |
| Richard Montauk will do an hour long consultation with you, followed by an hour or two hour consultation with the kid (he may also charge for an hour looking over their materials - written descriptions by you plus report cards) |
| I think they are just 30 minutes, but college wise does these kind of preview sessions. It's worth trying. |
| I work for a local company and we do this. |
| Of course, OP! You're asking if you can spend money. Yes, there are plenty of experts who will take it. |

Yes, I found a few people on here. One woman is a former AO and is very helpful.
Search under “essay coach” or similar. |
| Does your student have an aunt/cousin/family friend/neighbor who might be a good sounding board? Not sure how you would identify a counselor worth the consulting fee. |

Cue the Richard Montauk poster…the one and only who always mentions him and his books. Ones that have no reviews in the last 5 years. He’s a no name who you know personally or who you are related to or are actually him. Here’s a review about his get into law school book: Literal garbage. Do not go near this book if you want a chance of getting into law school. Information is outdated and, in some cases, just plain wrong. His most recent book is called: Waiting Tables for Very Good Money: A Guide for Ambitious Waiters and Waitresses His book abt getting into Brown has 4 reviews, all 4-5 years old. You make your own mind up. |
Uh, no. I've never posted before. He did well by my kid and I highly recommend him. |
And that is an issue if so many are claiming they are an expert. -NP |
Sure 🙄 |
I was made aware of him from posts like yours actually, when someone helpfully posted about him and you called her "Mrs. Montauk". I don't think there is a "Mrs" in his life but there are definitely parents paying him for his services, still. I have nothing to gain by mentioning him, as I said, we only spoke to him for a few hours, we didn't go "all in" for the big bucks deals. |
