Layering sun block and make up

Anonymous
I need to start wearing sunblock, as I have had moles removed due to risk of them turning cancerous. My doctor told me I need to wear sun block on my face regularly but am not sure what to layer first and how to handle reapplication of sunblock after makeup is on, later in the day.

Here is what I do now (woman in her 40s)

1. Wash face
2. Toner
3. Genefique serum by Estee Lauder
4. Facial Sun block
5. Absolute cream by Estee Lauder
6. Foundation

What do others do for morning routine and when reapplying sunblock midday?

I found a Facial sun block spray by Sun Bum but wonder how it sets on top of make up.

If your foundation has sunblock (mine does) I think you can skip that step. But I do everything else you do.

To many products for this weather. Just wash, tone, apply sunscreen, let soak in, apply light makeup.

How much are you outdoors during the day? If you are an office worker with a 1-hour commute, then indoors, then commute again... you shouldn't need to reapply.

My routine is just:

-Moisturizer after shower (I use an argan oil for the face, my skin does not absorb creams as well)
-Sun block (facial formulation, I like the one from TJs)
- CC cream with sunblock in it (right now using Eborian I think)

When I reapply, I just do another layer of sunblock and CC. If my face feels dirty, I'll rinse with micellar water first, pat dry, and then apply.

But I don't do this daily, only if I'm outside for extended periods. Otherwise I think my morning application plus maybe a reapplication of the CC as needed to address redness is sufficient.

This is insufficient for sun protection. You need a separate sunblock.

-warm water and jojoba oil rinse
-Dr Rogers lotion
-Elta MD UV clear

I stopped wearing foundation. If I need a little coverage I use use a light concealer or brighter (YSL toche eclat) and spot cover

All over foundation is aging

I use serums at night. In the morning, moisturizer, elta md 46 tinted, smashbox primer.

Step 5 (your moisturizer) should go after the serum. You don't want to put that over the sunblock as it will lessen its efficacy.

You could try using a sunscreen powder, like Super Goop's or Colorscience's, to reapply midday.

In the middle of the day, I put this on my hands and face:

You can add it on top of make up or on its own. I really like it.

I should add that this is in addition to the sunblock I put on in the morning. I use a tinted sunblock. I don’t wear foundation.

Thanks everyone! This has been so helpful!

I would swap 4 and 5 around and put sunblock on after your moisturizer and before your foundation. I have switched to mineral sunblock- my derm says it protects much better. I like Isdin sunblock and find my makeup goes on smoothly over it.
I haven’t found a touch up spray that I like but there are some spf dusting powders that i think are good. I only feel like I need it if I’m spending a lot of time outdoors in the afternoon.

My derm has SPF 50 tinted from France. I don't use foundation with it.

Unless you're out in the sun for hours during the day you don't need to reapply.

I put Elta MD sunscreen on in the morning and don't ever reapply (unless I'm at the beach or pool). I live in AZ which is basically the surface of the sun and I've never gotten sunburned from my daily activities. I'm in and out a lot during the day.
