New to FCPS, school not responding

Anonymous
How does one get in touch with a new school, we don’t know anyone. They are supposed to have limited staff few hours a day per automated message.

Does the message state the hours staff will be there?

Did you leave a message?

If the school has hours posted, like 9-12, I'd just go to the school.

One of the biggest shocks to me after we left FCPS for a mid-size city was having people at school get back to me, especially school counselors. I don't think I had a HS counselor in FCPS ever respond to me for things like schedule changes, etc. When our younger child was being bullied, they pulled our kid out of class and into the principal's office to meet face to face with the bullies. Plural, multiple. Nobody told me this was going to happen. They wanted our kid to apologize to the bullies. You're just a number in FCPS, get in line, and hope your kid is popular. Good luck, OP.

The school website likely has an email address for the person who is the registrar.

Go to the school. It's the only way I ever get anything accomplished.

Some schools/front office staff are better about this than others, unfortunately. Agreed that you might just have to go to the school in person during their summer hours (usually 9-12ish during the summer).

Getting in touch with people about stuff like evaluations for special education preschool over the summer … forget it. It was never great, but it got 1000x worse during Covid and never got better. The only way to get in touch with those folks at this point is to hope your kid hasn’t turned 3 yet and to go through Infants and Toddlers.

I think July is usually the slowest. I'm guessing more staff will be there next week.

What are you trying to contact the school about? Only a small portion of staff works in the summer.

OP literally stated that in the second sentence. I am guessing they have left a voicemail. There is limited staff but the school is open. It is so unacceptable for no one to respond but that’s the case with several schools and I’ve seen it’s got worse since Covid.

Op, you will have to fall into their rhythm. It's not about how things should operate. Not just this instance, but everything going forward. Find neighborhood parents who have experience with your local school and ask around how to accomplish things.

DP
The OP did not literally say that. OP only said, “limited staff few hours a day”.
