Dear Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Community, I hope this message finds you and your families well and enjoying a safe and restful summer. I am writing to share an important leadership update at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School (B-CC). After thoughtful reflection and conversations about what is in the best interest of the school community, Dr. Shelton Mooney has made the decision to accept a new position as assistant principal at Albert Einstein High School. We are most grateful for Dr. Mooney’s service and leadership as principal of B-CC and extend our best wishes as he takes on this next chapter. His dedication and efforts have contributed meaningfully to the school, and we are confident he will continue to make a positive impact within Montgomery County Public Schools. As we look ahead, our unwavering focus and priority remain on the well-being, academic growth, and well-rounded development of our students, along with the continued support of our dedicated staff and partnership with our families. We are committed to fostering a safe, inclusive learning environment grounded in excellence and supported by strong, responsive leadership. To ensure continuity in the interim, Assistant Principal Mr. DeBerry Goodwin will serve as acting principal. In addition, we are pleased to welcome Mr. Kevin Yates, a respected and seasoned retired principal, who will serve as the acting principal of B-CC effective August 12, 2025. Mr. Yates was the former principal of Damascus High School and, most recently, the acting principal at Montgomery Blair High School. We are committed to ensuring stability and continuity for staff, students and families in the year ahead. Early in the school year, we will share more information about the process for selecting the next principal of B-CC. Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Respectfully, Michael J. Zarchin, Ed.D. Director, Division of School Leadership and Improvement |
Jeez, Yates can't ever actually retire, huh? |
Yates is known as the cleaner-upper. In MCPS, that's a job that never ends ![]() Einstein gets BCC's reject, but in all fairness, Mooney was only incompetent as Principal. As Assistant Principal, he'll probably be OK. |
My thoughts exactly. Starting with Damascus HS, after their hazing scandal. He's great but it's unfortunate that the work continues to be necessary. |
Einstein parent here. We've heard nothing about this at all. |
How is Yates great? He had a hard time keeping DHS contained while he was there. Lots of kids skipping and harassing the areas near DHS. With open lunch there I really hope he does a better job. We had to have police stationed at the grocery store because the kids were stealing so much. Yikes. |
Even the best Principals have trouble with open lunch. The venerated former Walter Johnson Principal, Jennifer Baker, dealt with open lunch shenanigans a few years ago by curtailing lunch privileges for lower grades and threatening those of the seniors and juniors. The ones who threw chairs and took out knives in front of businesses at lunch were individually disciplined. It worked. |
He refused to discipline. It went on and on and on and on. Things are much better now with the new principal. |
Bad news for BCC then. We just had two lockdowns this past year for gun incidents. Haven't heard of any open lunch issues, but then it's downtown Bethesda - I think the lunch places are pretty hardened and don't hesitate to call police immediately. |
Once Mooney admitted in court that he "made up part of the quote about the teacher" (!!!) last week, there had to be consequences. I'm just surprised MCPS actually did anything. |
Well, it took a lawsuit for Mooney to get demoted but glad it's finally happening. It would be better if he was completely fired from MCPS instead of being demoted, but I know MCAAP won't let that happen. |
That's why you're on this site. You heard it first here. |
You mean shuffled their staff to a new school? Where are the consequences for those at Central office who allegedly told Mooney to fabricate or was that a rumor? |
I don't think he merits being fired. He has not sexually harassed anyone, like Beidleman, or done anything too terrible. The demotion is justified, however. |
The lawsuit was not the only failing. There were also several high-profile safety and security failures at BCC that warrant his firing. |
