On a seperate thread lately there were people commenting on where a particular GPA fell in the TJ distribution spectrum. I don't know where this info is found but was curious about it.
1) Where can I find the GPA distribution of current TJ students by grade level? (DC is there in case it's an in-house only resource) 2) If DC's GPA is 4.44 after the end of Junior year, roughly where would that fall? |
| 2) top 1% - as they already know |
|
Top 1% is 4.6 GPA at end of Junior year
Top 5% is 4.5 Top 10% is 4.45 |
I know that’s not true. DC knows of kids that have 4.5 to 4.7’s and have worked the AP system much harder. - OP |
This sounds about right. |

4.4 is def top 15-%
OP - open up Naviance scattergram. Pick a school like UVa and VT where most TJ kids apply - and u will see that 4.4 is in the top quadrant - on the upper end. My best guess is 3.25 to 4: 25% 4 to 4.25: 25% 4.25 to 4.40: 35% 4.40 and above 15% |
In ‘22-‘23, the highest GPA at TJ for that year’s graduating class was a 4.663. |
You are way off. First of all, the Scattergrams represent the GPA at graduation when GPAs climb the highest because of all the post-AP classes every senior takes that are give them 5.0 for an A. A 4.5 puts you in the top 25% of juniors. A 4.4 puts you outside the top 1/3. |
You’re even more off. 4.5 junior year is definitely top 10%. |
I think 4.5 is at least top 10% |

From what i heard of, 4.45 is roughly UVA cut off GRA for TJ. My guess is that is perhaps top 33%. |
The highest junior GPA i heard so far for TJ2026 is 4.67. |
Fine, I take back the 4.7 (although i'd note that 4.67 rounds to 4.7). My point was that my kid is aware of plenty of others with higher GPAs and came in just "normal advanced" not doing Calc in 9th or 10th, so I highly doubted that equated to top 1%. - OP |
my dc who is a rising senior at TJ has a gpa of ‘only’ 4.2.
