Re-using school supplies?

Anonymous
Is there anything wrong with this? Some of the supplies my kid brought home are very mildly used.

Do people reuse supplies?

I think. I feel strange because we always buy new ones but these are still in good shape.

Of course you reuse. Why in the world would you throw them away and buy new if you don’t need them.

Op here. We didn’t throw the old ones away, they just ended up in the house pile/drawer.

Of course. There have been misfirings where we bought stuff that my kids didn't like. They lingered for years in a corner until someone forced themselves to use them, or I recycled them. But generally we take care to buy things that we like and think we can use.

We totally reuse. I have my stash of old school supplies in my closet and my kids know to go shopping there first when they get their school supply lists for a new year. Only after they have exhausted everything there, do we purchase to fill any gaps.

Yes, if in really good condition.

Why wouldn't you?
Kids really don't need much in the way of supplies. Most of those lists are just to help the local stores make more money.
Pencils, pens, colors, scissors, notebook paper, and whatever minor things on top of that, with something to keep them in.
Backpacks and boxes, folders, binders, etc. can last years.

This is a nutso question.

I have a rising 8th grader in private and yes we reuse supplies. I actually just went over her list last week so I knew what she had already and what I needed to buy. I only need to get about half new.

All our school supplies go in a closet at the end of the school year. When the new list comes out, we shop the closet first.

This seems like the posts in Food thread when people ask if it’s ok to eat leftovers.

We reuse them too. My kids chew on some of them but we too make them use it. As long as it works, not throwing them away.

We try to reuse, but since we bought school supply box every year so didn’t really have chance, except we liked our own headphone ( the one from supply box is low quality). This year we just got our own school supplies, we know something like pack of pencils and tissue paper etc, teacher would ask to put into class baskets so definitely won’t sent something for reuse, but things like pencil pouch/scissor/ruler/headphone etc we will reuse.
