Northwestern vs Cornell for gov/history/law oriented student

Good candidate for both. Can’t see how they are different. Could someone shed some light? I know quarter system vs semesters has a diff rhythm.

I always thought Northwestern kids were a less stressed happier crowd than Cornell kids. But that just might be me and how I’ve conjured the school vibes in my head.

Why do people ask these types of questions before their kid is even admitted? Chances are high that they’ll be rejected from both, even with amazing stats.

With that said, the settings are completely different. Which did your kid like better?

Cornell is larger and not near a big city. Likely to be very different vibes. Admission may be a bit more difficult at Northwestern. Northwestern makes it very easy to double or even triple major, if that is of interest.

ED is the way to optimize chances for either of these schools. I would strongly recommend visiting both.

NU is located steps from a large metropolitan area. Cornell is located in rural NY with gorges, lakes and hiking trails

Northwestern has about 8000 undergraduates while Cornell has about 16,000. When you add in graduate students, the total enrollment is much closer (Cornell 26K vs NU 22K)

You already mentioned the quarter system at NU. Other than that, your kid will get the same excellent education at either school. It’s a matter of where they want to be and feel most comfortable.

PP. They are probably asking because they are thinking about ED. But yes, they should visit to decide which they like better.

Because you can only apply ED to ONE school.

My kid, who is majoring in security policy and international affairs, hesitated between Georgetown and George Washington. He preferred George Washington. They are both in the top 10 *worldwide* for undergraduate and graduate international relations, according to the journal Foreign Policy. Cornell and Northwestern are not in the top ten for that undergrad specialty. Cornell is 15th for graduate school.

Posts like this make me want to pull my hair out. There is zero difference between these schools for a prelaw student.

I’m a glutton for punishment. I hate the college forum on DCUM so much. It’s just a bunch of insecure college prestige obsessed weirdos seeking and getting advice from people who know absolutely nothing and frequently dispense terribly wrong information that is easily debunked by a minute’s research.

Yet I keep coming back.

We have visited both. I understand the geographic differences, the quarter system, the size, etc. I’m asking because I can’t figure out the substantive differences beyond the stats. Yes this is about ED.

Mine was considering both, went to admit days, don’t think there is much substantive you’re missing. I think main differences are ones you already know about.

Then the answer is whichever school the student prefers the vibe for. They are both excellent schools.
